Roger Thompson

Roger L. Thompson, 58, of Ely died Saturday November 12, 2016 at St. Luke’s Hospital. Memorial services at 11:00 AM on Thursday at Hope United Church of Christ in Hiawatha. There will be a visitation on Wednesday from 4 to 8 PM at the Brosh Funeral Chapel in Solon. Iowa Cremation is in charge of arrangements.

Survivors include two daughters Alyssa and Amanda Thompson, and a son Adam all of Ely; his mother Nadine of Cedar Rapids; three brothers Mark (Doni) of Ely, Scott of Cedar Rapids and Bill (Becky) of Marion. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father.

Roger was born on June 10, 1958 in Cedar Rapids the son of Richard and Nadine Tate Thompson. He graduated from Prairie High School in 1976. He later graduated from Mt. Mercy University and was working toward completing his Master’s degree from the University of Iowa.

Roger was a special education and drivers education teacher for the Solon Community School System for over twenty four years. He was a devoted educator, respected by both his students and fellow faculty members.  In 2003 Roger was awarded the Educational Partner of the Year from Grant Wood AEA. In 2011 the Solon Optimist Club honored him with the Teacher of the Year Award. 

Roger was an avid Hawkeye and Oakland Raider fan. He enjoyed yard work, gardening and especially the time spent with his beloved family, friends and students. He was a wonderful son, father, brother, and friend whose memory will be cherished by all who knew and loved him. 

A memorial fund has been established.
