Marcene Francis Lynch

Marcene Francis Lynch, 86, of Perry, died Sunday, November 27, 2016. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, December 1, at Glendale Cemetery, Des Moines, Iowa.

Marcene, born May 17, 1930, at home on E. 38 Court in Des Moines, was the second child of Pearl “Sparky” and Margaret “Maggie” (Watson) McCollum. She and her sister Mary moved with their parents to Kansas City, where her father continued to work for the Ford Motor Company after the Des Moines plant closed. Her brother, Dean, was born there. The family moved back to Des Moines when Marcene was 8. She attended the 1939 World’s Fair in New York with her grandparents Bender. Marcene taught drums for Hullings Music House and played accordion in the large Hullings Accordion Band, which was visited by Lawrence Welk. By the time she was 15, she was entertaining the Women’s Des Moines Area Chamber of Commerce and other organizations with her music. Marcene attended East High School, where she refined her drawing and painting skills.

Marcene married Maynard Boatwright and they had three children. She was president of the Woodmen of the World, a fraternal organization. Marcene and Maynard divorced and Marcene married James Lynch. They had two children and resided on 46th Street in Des Moines, where she continued to live after Jim’s death in 1972. Marcene enjoyed the backyard swimming pool, built by her son Michael, where they hosted annual Fourth of July pool parties.

Marcene worked for Diamond Laboratories and the American Lung Association. In 1977, she worked for American Federal Savings and Loan, where she performed database administration. She was president of the Savings and Loan Computer Trust conference. The S&L crisis in 1992 forced closure of the company and Marcene was the last employee there.

She enjoyed gardening, playing cards (both in person and online), painting portraits and landscapes, and vacationing with her family and friends. She was a talented seamstress and sewed elaborate wedding dresses for her daughters. She also crocheted many lovely afghans. Marcene had a kind heart, taking in family and friends when they had nowhere else to go.

Marcene is survived by her sons, Dan Boatwright, Keokuk; Michael (Cindy) Boatwright; Patrick (Tracy) Lynch; and stepson Jim Lynch; all of Des Moines; daughters, Cynthia (Mark) Perkins, Cedar Rapids; Kelly Lynch, Perry; daughters-in-law Karen Lynch, Fort Dodge; Jane Lynch, Altoona; and stepdaughter Linda Lynch (Simmons), San Diego, CA; brother Dean McCollum, Des Moines; 16 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Her husbands, sister Mary, stepson Michael Lynch, son-in-law Jay Steece, and sister-in-law Mary McCollum  preceded her in death.

In lieu of flowers, a contribution to the family or Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation is suggested.
