In 1945 Lyle enlisted in the Army and proudly served his country.  He was honorably discharged in 1947.

He lived most of his life in the Charles City area where he farmed and ran his logging company, Bunston Logging Company. He moved in 1995 to Humboldt, IA.

He made many good friends and had lots of fond memories at the track.

On October 1, 1949, Lyle married the love of his life.  His wife of 67 years, Patricia Ann Freiberg.  He is survived by his wife Patricia Bunston, brother Dale Bunston, sister Vera May Davidson, five children, Lyle (Mila) Bunston Jr. of Humboldt, IA, Karen Beine of Floyd, IA, Sheryl (Dan) Johnson of Cedar Rapids, IA, Julie (Zody) Brown, Lisa (Chris) Gebel of Charles City, IA, nine grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, and 17 great-grandchildren.
