Joyce Evonne Sales

Joyce Evonne Sales passed away peacefully in her sleep with her husband by her side on November 28, 2016.

Joyce was born July 22, 1932 in Adrian, Minnesota. Joyce spent her early days in Kanaranzi, Minnesota and then on her family’s farm in Sibley, Iowa. Joyce attended country schools until high school. She often reminisced about how she loved her one room school house, especially how the older kids took care of the younger kids. Joyce was the salutatorian of her graduating class, the drum majorette of the marching band, and met the love of her life at Sibley High School. 1950 was an eventful year for Joyce. She graduated from high school, married John Phillip “Jack” Sales, and gave birth to her first child, Jerri Lynn. Joyce had five children by the time she was 25 and spent her early married life as a “wonderful wife” to her husband Jack, rearing the kids, and collecting payments for Jack’s plumbing business. Joyce’s kids remember her propensity to pull pranks on her children and how she always championed the underdog. In 1966, the Sales family moved to Iowa City. Joyce worked at the United States Post Office and the University of Iowa Hospitals. She and Jack also built a successful real estate business rescuing and rehabilitating old homes in Iowa City. One property they were particularly proud of saving from demolition was Iowa City’s first hotel, “Lean Back Hall” located on Brown Street. Joyce enjoyed her retirement meeting interesting people through her rental properties, cultivating friendships through Al-Anon, appreciating life at her home on the Iowa River boating and fishing, and doting on her numerous grandchildren. Her grandchildren remember doing endless fun things with their “sassy” and “strong” grandmother. Some of their favorite memories include ice skating on the pond near Joyce’s home in the winter, having tea parties with dolls from her treasured collection, and receiving personalized greeting cards. Grandma Joyce also showed her spunk when interacting with her grandkids. They remember never ending games of cards, during which she kept an extra deck under the table or in the bathroom, and how she tried to pick up dates for them at restaurants and other outings. Her family will remember a loving sister, mother, and grandmother who trained a new generation to live life to the fullest and have fun while doing it.

Joyce is survived by her husband, Jack; brothers Gary (Rosemary), and Galen Nicks; sister-in-law Norinne Petersen, brother-in-law Fred (Marilyn) Sales, five children and 13 grandchildren: Jerri Lynn (John) Bricker and their children: Christine, Matt (Heidi), and Alina Bricker; Jeffrey Scott Sales and his children: Amanda (Tim) Goodhall, Brianne (Tom) Irlbeck, and Zachary (Karen Guzman) Sales; Jeb Douglas Sales and his children: Jerrad and Joseph Sales, and Joel Thomas (Tracy) Sales and their children: Kyle (Lindsay) and Erik Sales and grandchildren Amo, John (Christine Walsh) Sales, and Josh (Cristi Downs) Sales, 12 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. Joyce was preceded in death by her son John David Sales, and her parents Helen June (Attig) and William Ira Nicks and sisters Leora Kauffman, Joanne Hudson, and Linda Nicks.
