Barbara Ashby
Barbara Ashby, 88, a long-time resident of Cedar Rapids, IA died on November 24, 2016 at Hiawatha Care Center. She was born on March 8, 1928 in St. Louis, MO to Dr. Neil and Nell McCollum and grew up in West Frankfort IL. Barbara graduated from Northwestern University with a BA in English and taught in the elementary schools in West Frankfort for seven years.
Barbara and Wayne Ashby were married in 1957 in West Frankfort. Following their wedding, Barbara joined Wayne in Cedar Rapids where she resided until entering Promise House in 2011. Wayne preceded Barbara in death in 1976. They had no children. Following Wayne’s death, Barbara worked as a proofreader at the Gazette in Cedar Rapids.
Barbara is survived by her cousins Joan Dillingham and Sara (Sally) Kresser and their families. To know Barbara was to love her and she had numerous friends. She was especially close to her dear friends, Phyllis and Jon Griswold and Jayne Woodson.
A memorial service will be held in Barbara’s memory at Noelridge Christian Church in Cedar Rapids during the summer of 2017.
