Doris Savala

Doris Savala, 80, of Cedar Rapids passed away on Friday, May 27, 2016 at Mercy Medical Center.

Doris Annette Syferd was born January 21, 1936 to Leland and Aletha Syferd in Allerton, Iowa.  Doris attended school in Allerton and graduated from Allerton High School in 1954.  It was at Allerton High School that Doris met Russell Ireland.  They were married June 25, 1955.  They had four children Kim (Rick) Poling, Andalusia, IL; Koleen (Tim) Janney, Cedar Rapids, IA; Kevin (Sandy) Ireland, Ontario, CA; and Kit Ireland, Cedar Rapids, IA.  This marriage ended in divorce.  Doris married Joseph (Jose) Savala in Moline, IL on September 15, 1973 and started her next journey in life with Joe and his two children Laura (Tim) Luken, East Moline, IL and Steve (Sandra) Savala, Silvis, IL.

Doris spent several years at home raising her children.  After all of the children were in school Doris worked in clerical positions and was a long time employee at Von Maur in Davenport, IA.  Doris was an avid bowler and enjoyed card club with her friends.  Doris and Joe loved spending weekends at their cabin on the Wapsi.  She really loved a good book and could often be found trying her luck at one of the local casinos.  Doris was a life-long Hawkeye fan and enjoyed watching and attending Cubs and Bears games with Jose.  She also loved spending time with her furry friend, Puff.

Doris had 12 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren and one grandkitty.

Doris was preceded in death by her husband Joe, both of her parents, her sister Twila and her brother Duane.

A luncheon will be held on June 18, 2016, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the First Christian Church, 510 East 15th Street, Davenport, Iowa.  The burial will be in Allerton, Iowa at a private ceremony for the family.  Please join her family in celebrating Doris’ life and send her off on the next leg of her journey.
