Dale Brinkmeyer

Dr. Dale Brinkmeyer, 92, of New London, Iowa died at Great River Klein Unit, West Burlington, Iowa on Sunday evening, July 3, 2016 on his 92nd birthday.

Graveside services with military rights will be held in Lone Tree, Iowa on Friday, July 8, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at the Lone Tree cemetery.

Born on July 3, 1924 at the family farm in Lone Tree, he was the son of Lacey and Bessie Buline Brinkmeyer.  He grew up on the family dairy farm outside of Lone Tree and delivered milk locally with his older brother – Garold.  He graduated from Lone Tree High School in 1942 and attended the University of Iowa for one semester.

Dale served in the Army Air Corps during WWII.  He married Donna Diane Rayner in the chapel at Blackland Army Air Corps base near Waco, Texas.  After the war, he finished his first year at the University of Iowa.  He then enrolled in the College of Veterinary Medicine at Iowa State College in Ames, Iowa on the G.I. bill and graduated as a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 1951.  He then moved to New London, Iowa where he practiced large and small animal veterinary medicine for 26 years, becoming particularly well-respected for his work with hogs.  He became the Assistant State Veterinarian for the Department of Agriculture and moved to Des Moines in 1978.  In 1981, he moved back to New London and worked as the District Veterinarian for southeast Iowa, retiring in 1989.

Dr. Brinkmeyer served on the Executive Board of the Eastern Iowa Veterinary Association and on the National Hog Cholera Committee.  He was an honorary Master Pork Producer.

As a 65-year member of the New London Presbyterian Church, he served as an Elder, Trustee, and a Sunday School teacher as well as leading the tenor section of the choir for over 50 years.

Locally, he served New London as a volunteer fireman, on the New London School Board, on the Town Council, and as the mayor of New London.  He also served on numerous local service project committees including the New London swimming pool and senior citizen housing.  He was honored as a “Friend of Education” by New London Schools and received the JC Distinguished Service award.

Dr. Brinkmeyer loved life and laughed often.  He enjoyed singing in a barbershop chorus and quartet.  His family was a continued source of joy and pleasure to him and he was never happier than when he was surrounded by whom he loved.

Survivors include his wife of 71 years, two daughters, Denise Bell (David) of New London, Donna Brinkmeyer (Lance McAllister) of Fountain Hills, Arizona, and one son, Dirk Brinkmeyer (Diane) of Bradenton, Florida, seven grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Garold Brinkmeyer, all of Lone Tree.

Memorials for the Alzheimer’s Association and Great River Hospice may be mailed to the Brinkmeyer family at 205 South Orchard Lane, New London, IA 52645.
