Annie Amelia (Whitehead) Files, of Marion, IA, formerly of Murray, IA, passed away at 8:15 am on Sunday morning, January 31, 2016 at the age of 99 at St. Luke’s Living Center West in Cedar Rapids, IA.

Annie was born to parents John William and Nellie Blanche (Wright) Whitehead on January 4, 1917 in Silver City, IA. She attended Silver City High School and graduated in 1934. She enjoyed playing basketball in high school.

Annie married Vernon Files in 1934, and the couple had four children. Annie worked at the Snowdon’s lingerie factory in Osceola, IA for many years before moving to Warrensburg, MO to be a dorm mom at the University of Central Missouri; to Marshalltown, IA working at Meeker Laundry; and then to Des Moines, IA working as a lab tech at Mercy Hospital until her retirement.  

Annie taught Sunday School at the Murray Church of Christ for several years and enjoyed singing in the church choir. She enjoyed traveling. She especially enjoyed traveling to Florida in the winter to visit nieces and nephews and to Arizona to visit her sons & wives and grandchildren. She also was an avid quilter, making sure she made quilts for each of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She enjoyed playing cards with family members and friends, listening to Cubs baseball games, crocheting, sewing and she especially enjoyed helping others. She really enjoyed spending her summers at Sun Valley Lake in Ellston, IA with her son Ray, daughter-in-law, Laveda and her daughter Dorothy.  Her greatest joy was getting to visit with all of her family members every year at the Whitehead Family Reunion.

Annie is survived by two daughters, Dorothy White and Kathy (Ken) Peterson; her two sons, Ray (Laveda) Files and Robert (Nancy) Files. She was blessed to have sixteen grandchildren; forty-four great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents; her sisters, Mae Whitehead; Dorothy, Ruth, Laura, Lola Whitehead (infants), Dora Alley, Edna Lohrenz and Frances Barr; and her brothers, George (infant), John, Leonard, Clare and Donald Whitehead. She was a blessing to all who knew her.

A memorial service will be held June 4, 2016 at the Murray Church of Christ at 11:00 am with burial at the Murray Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Murray Church of Christ, 430 3rd Street, Murray, IA 50174, or to Trinity Christian Church, 16773 State Highway 2, Decatur, IA 50067.
