Donald Murray

Donald Warren Murray, 99 years of age on February 17, 2016 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He was born April 8, 1916 in Virginia, Minnesota to Malcom A. Murray and Elvina (Bentz) Murray and was the second of four children. On July 5, 1947 in Petoskey, Michigan he was married to Audrey McPherson who preceded him in death on January 9, 2016.

He was a 1939 graduate of the University Of Minnesota School Of Forestry and was an employee of the US Department if Agriculture Forest Service until his induction into the US Army in 1942. He served with the 214th Coast Anti-Aircraft Battalion on Guadacanal and was discharged in 1946 with the rank of Captain.

Thureson Lumber Company employed him for twenty-five years as a timber buyer. He later worked for the Buskirk Lumber Company and retired in 1984. He enjoyed selling “Cut your own” Christmas trees which he had planted on his property on Fisher Road in anticipation of retirement, and was an avid vegetable gardener. He also enjoyed woodworking, archery,
hunting, photography, and singing.

He moved to Howell, Michigan in 1946 and has been a member of the First United Methodist Church since 1947. He was a member of the church choir from 1994 to 2012.

Survivors include a sister, Janis Clune of CA: two daughters, Barbara Murray of San Diego, CA, and Linda Toberer of Veneta, OR; two sons, David Murray of Cedar Rapids, IA, and Bruce Murray of Grayling, MI. Grandchildren included Eric Toberer of Golden, CO, Brian Murray of Reston, VA, Steven Murray of W. Lafayette, IN, Douglas Murray of Cedar Falls, IA, Elaina Murray of College Station, TX, and Max Murray of Grayling, MI.

There will be a memorial service at a later date.

Memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society or the First United Methodist Church of Howell Michigan.
