Charles H (CH) Grose, 85, died February 24, 2016 in Cedar Rapids, IA. A resident of Cedar Rapids since February 2011, he resided most of his life in Ballston Spa, NY. The son of the late Charles H Grose Jr and Katharine Hollister Grose, he was born in Ballston Spa, September 2, 1930.

A memorial service will be held Sat, Feb 27, at 3 pm at New Life Community Church, 275 West 29th Ave, Marion, IA, with visitation being held an hour beforehand.  In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts made out to New Life Community Church are preferred.  A future memorial service and interment will be at Ballston Spa.

A graduate of Ballston Spa High School and St Lawrence University, he joined the family businesses, which included the Ballston Journal, February 1954. In 1958 he became publisher of the Journal, a weekly newspaper that traced its history back to 1798. He also served as publisher of several other weekly newspapers belonging to Journal Newspapers, including a newspaper in Johnstown, NY, which he started in 1962 and where he lived for several years in the 1960’s before selling that paper.

In 1983 he sold the newspaper company to his step-son, Charles Hogan, and retired from active participation in a newspaper that had been in his family since 1860. In July 1985, he began 14 months as a consultant to the Ballston Spa National Bank, establishing their first in-house marketing department.

Active in the community for many years, he served as an Explorer Scout Assistant Advisor, was public relations chairman for a local Red Cross chapter, and served on the committee that oversaw the building of the current library in 1959. He also was on the library board in Johnstown while living there. He served as an elder of the First Presbyterian Church in Ballston Spa and in Johnstown for many years. He was also a former member of Rotary Clubs in Ballston Spa and Johnstown and served a year as president of the Johnstown Chamber of Commerce. He was an alternate member of the village zoning board of appeals for a period of time.

He enjoyed gardening and golfing and, for nearly 15 years, had a second home in Pinehurst, NC, where he was a member of the Pinehurst Country Club. He was also a former member of the Ballston Spa Country Club.

He is survived by two sons, Lawrence Grose of St Louis Park, MN and Peter Grose of Cedar Rapids, IA; a daughter, Susan Grose of Webster, MA; a step-son, Charles Hogan of Ballston Spa; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two brothers, Robert Grose of Culpeper, VA and Richard Grose of Venice, FL; plus numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and step-grandchildren.

His first wife, Julia Jorgensen Grose, died in 1971. His second wife, Edith (Kate) Geertsen Grose, died in 2008. A step-son, David Hogan, also predeceased him.

Memorial donations may be directed to the family.
