William Charles Smith

William Charles Smith entered the Kingdom of Heaven on December 14, 2016.  He was born in Ames, Iowa on February 12, 1928, to Harley Smith and Rose Sills Smith. Bill graduated from Ames High School in 1947. He was drafted into the Army in 1950, serving in Korea until his honorable discharge from active duty in 1952.  Bill married Wilma J. Ugolini in Madrid, Iowa, on October 24th, 1953.  Graduating from Iowa State University in 1958 with a degree in Industrial Administration, Bill soon after accepted a job as business manager and accountant for Wells Concrete Products Company.  He was employed there for 31 years, before retiring in 1991.

While living in Wells, Minnesota, Bill was very active in the community working with the Cub Scouts of America, Civil Air Patrol, and city council.  He served as Commander of the American Legion, President of the American Management Society, and Charter President of the Lions Club. Bill was also a very active member of St. Casimirs Catholic Church, serving as one of the first Eucharistic Ministers and helping with various fundraising projects for the church.

Bill was an avid golfer, serving on the Board of Directors for the Wells Golf Club.  He also enjoyed 25 years of bowling league participation, which included attending National Tournaments throughout the country. Bill’s greatest enjoyment was being able to spend time with his grandchildren, particularly at Twin Anchors Golf Course in Nevada, Iowa.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents, four sisters, one niece, and two nephews.  Leaving behind to cherish his memory are his beloved wife (Wilma), his daughter (Jean Sherman Deming) and son-in-law (Mark Deming), and five grandchildren.

A Poem for Bill

The pain of losing you is unbearable
But now I know you must go
Please save a place for me beside you
Until it’s time for me to go

Your everlasting home will soon be near
The Lord is waiting – do not fear
And when it’s time for me to go, please…
Save a place for me beside you

So many memories are stored within me
Laughter comes and then more tears
How blessed we were to have these years
So save a place for me beside you

Thank you Dear Loving Husband
For all those years we shared
Good days and bad, we made it through
Because we loved and cared

So until we meet again, please…
Save a place for me beside you

Your loving wife,
Wilma
