Richard Leroy Franklin

Richard Leroy Franklin, 83, of Marion passed away on Saturday, August 27, 2016, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha. A celebration of life will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, August 30, 2016 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 1790 14th St. in Marion. Family will greet friends from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.  Burial will be at Mt Calvary Cemetery, 375 32nd St Dr. SE. Cedar Rapids.

Richard was born on September 10, 1932, to Howard and Irene Crowley Franklin in Walker, Iowa. He grew up in Central City and graduated from Marion High School. He joined the United States Army and served during the Korean War. 

On July 11, 1956, he married Mary Barbara Nolan in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and to their union six children were born.

Richard was a very loving husband, father and grandfather making sure his family was filled with laughter and love. In his career he farmed for many years and later retired from Rockwell Goss.

Richard enjoyed his family especially his grandchildren, camping and he was considered a jack-of-all-trades. He was a member of St. Patrick’s Church in Anamosa for forty years and most recently St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Marion. 

Those to cherish Richard’s memory are his wife, Mary Barbara of 60 years, children, Laurie (Kevin) Smith of Springville, Jeff (Kerry) Franklin of Oshkosh, WI, Tim (Kim) Franklin of Mitchellville, Rob (BJ) Franklin of Cedar Rapids, Katie (Jeff) Pickel of Martelle; grandchildren, Hannah Smith, Preston (Lindsay) Franklin, Nolan Smith, Zach (Shannon) Franklin, Megan (Eric) Boyken, Nevin Smith, Morgan Franklin, Ethan Franklin, Brianna Pickel, Molly Franklin, Allie Franklin, Quinn Franklin, Emily (Troy) Hutchins; four brothers, Harlan, Ron, Ray and Don, one sister Lorraine and many loving family and friends.

Richard is preceded in death by his parents, daughter Susan and brother, Loras.

Memorials if desired may be directed to the family.
