Barbara Burn

Barbara Burn passed away Thursday April 7th at the Bright Kavanaugh House.  Memorial Service will be Saturday, April 16 at 11 am at Union Park United Methodist Church, with lunch to follow.

Barbara Louise Burn was born August 10, 1932 in Brainerd, MN.  Preceded in death by her parents, Ray & Hilda (Weimar) Hall, Brother Kenneth (Harriet) Hall and sister Ruth (Irv) Ritari.  Educated through high school in Brainerd, obtained BA in 1954 from Hamline University in St. Paul, MN and an MA in Library Science in 1958 from Peabody College for Teachers in Nashville, TN.  In 1967 she obtained a certificate in continuing education from Emory Univ. of Atlanta, GA.  She was the library director at Grand View College for 36 years until her retirement in 1994.

Barb spent considerable time traveling in various motor homes, including spending winters in Texas from 1998 until 2005.  She is a lifetime member of the Good Sam organization.

She volunteered at the Planned Parenthood  Bookworks, putting in time of the paperbacks since 1998.  She also attended meeting of the Friends of the ICIW (Iowa Corrections Institution for Women, Fresh Start).  She spent time acquiring books on the library’s want list for them.

She was also a member of the National Organization for Women, Americans United for Separation of Church & State, Arthritis Foundation, American Diabetes Assn., Friends of Iowa Public Radio, Friends of Iowa Public TV, American Heart Assn., Compassion & Choices,  and National Women’s Historical Museum.  

She was a lifetime emmber of the Iowa Library Assn.  She belonged to the Union Park United Methodist Church, serving as their church librarian.  Memorial may be given to Union Park UMC.  

She is survived by her 3 children, Sabra (Tim) Hess of Des Moines, Kurt (Andrea) Bell of Lebanon, OH and Marna Falcone of Des Moines, grandsons Donald and Steven Hess, Vincent Falcone of Des Moines and granddaughters Leah, Mallory and Jesse Bell of Lebanon, OH.
