Helen "Maxine" Butel

Helen “Maxine” (Shull) Butel, 101 passed away on Saturday, October 3, 2015, in Bettendorf, Iowa.

The family has planned a cremation followed by a private family memorial to be held on Thanksgiving weekend.

Maxine was born on February 23, 1914, Horton Kansas to Charles and Mary (Ruppert) Shull.  She graduated from Horton High School in 1932.  She married Gerald Butel in Topeka, Kansas where they owned and operated a drug store.  Maxine relocated to the Quad City area in 1940 and worked in the food service industry, Harding & Williams Canteen where she retired after twenty-five years.

Maxine loved to dance.  She and her very special friend George danced for thirty years every Wednesday and Saturday at the Col Ballroom.  She was an avid reader and amazing story teller.  She loved spending time with her children and grandchildren, routinely cooking and playing cards or doing puzzles with her visitors.  Maxine loved to garden and applied her creativity doing watercolor painting, stain glass, crocheting, knitting, and sewing.

The family smiles in comfort knowing that Maxine, “GiGi” to her grandchildren, has returned home after a long and beautiful life on Earth.  She was one of a kind and those who knew her were truly lucky to be on the receiving end of such a graceful and loving woman.  Maxine showed her care in the everyday things; a meal, a smile, a good story, or just quiet support with her presence.  Those are the things that her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren will carry with them and pass on to the next generation.  Her kind and generous ways will continue to live through those she touched.

Maxine is survived by her two children Rita Kay (Butel) Fitzgerald (Gregory Keoplin) of Bettendorf, IA and Rex M. (Yvonne) Butel of Apache Junction, AZ; four grandsons, Jay and Randy Fitzgerald, Jerry and Steve Butel; and fifteen great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her brothers Ward and Charles Shull and an infant brother.

The family would like to thank all of the staff and the residents at Riverview Manor for all of their compassion and support.
