Howard Stumme

Howard Stumme (1932-2015)

Howard Stumme was born on December 10, 1932 in West Union, Iowa, the youngest son of Arnold Stumme (1900-1988) and Lydia Spier Stumme (1905-1975).  His brother is LaVern Stumme of Postville.  He was baptized at Zion Lutheran Church, West Union, on January 1, 1933.  He grew up in Clermont, confirmed at West Clermont Lutheran Church in 1947 and graduated from Clermont High School in 1950.   In 1952, he joined the United States Air Force and served as a tailgunner in B-26's.  He served for 4 years during the Korean Conflict, stationed in Texas and Korea.

On August 3, 1958, he married Madonna Gisleson of Luana, Iowa.  Their children are Mark Stumme (Becky Brandt) of Forest City, Iowa. Lane Stumme (Maggie Willis) of Altoona, Iowa.  Sarah Stumme (John Berg) of Northbrook, IL.  Madonna and Howard have 11 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. They made their home in Postville, Iowa.

He loved his wife "Donna" and cared deeply about his family.  He placed a high value on education and supported his kids in pursuing their educational fields and work.  He was a voracious reader, interested in the world and had an open mind and heart. He never stopped learning.

Howard retired from the IGA in 1999, working over 40 years at the grocery store.  He was also the bookkeeper for Madonna's Beauty Shop.  He served several years on the Postville Library Board and on the council and various committees of West Clermont Lutheran Church.  Howard was recently recognized for 50 year membership in the American Legion.

Howard loved talking with people. He was a card shark and played for the mental challenge and for good conversation. He had a great sense of humor and loved to tease.  He will be missed dearly by his friends and family.
