Jean Bender

Jean Bender, 85, of rural Wellman, passed away peacefully Sunday afternoon, July 12, 2015 in her home.  Visitation with the family will be July 16, 2015 from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Lower Deer Creek Mennonite Church.  A private memorial service, as was her wish, will be held Friday, July 17, 2015 at 3:00 p.m. for immediate family. Burial will be in Lower Deer Creek Cemetery.

Jean was born March 4, 1930 in rural Kalona, Iowa, the daughter of Maynard and Bertha (Reber) Brenneman.  She attended Iowa Mennonite School, graduating in 1949.  On January 1, 1951, she married Maurice Bender at Lower Deer Creek Mennonite Church.  Jean and Maurice spent several years farming and a two year term in 1W service before starting a refrigeration repair business that continued until their retirement in 2002.  Jean was known for her collection of red dishes that she accumulated throughout her life.

Jean was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and a son, James.  She is survived by two sons: Ken (Brenda) Bender of Wellman, Iowa, and Mike (Jennifer) Bender of Bloomington, Illinois; three grandchildren: Ken’s children, Carlie of Albia, Iowa and Dillon of Wellman, Iowa; as well as Mike’s son Jeb.  Also surviving are two sisters Darlene (Leo) Miller and twin, Donna (Cliff) Helgens; as well as a brother Curtis (Sue) Brenneman.
The family would like to thank all those who were a friend to mom in life and a comfort to the family in her death.
