Jeanette M. Berns

Our mother, Jeanette M. Berns of Guttenberg, died on Sunday, February 1, 2015 at the Edgewood Convalescent Home. Mom had physical ailments over the years, but at 95 she passed away very peacefully.

Mom was born April 21, 1919 in Clayton County to Gregor and Anna (Miller) Kann. After elementary school, she helped with the family and later worked in Chicago. She came home to marry Wilfred Berns on April 27, 1943. Dad preceded her in death in October 1947.

Mom’s heritage includes 2 daughters, Joyce Hyde of Guttenberg and Jean (Terry) Green of Guttenberg; grandchildren Christopher (Stephanie) Berns, Independence, Chad (friend Robin) Berns, Milwaukee, Jennifer (Josh) Clinton, Cedar Rapids, Richard Hyde, Guttenberg, Thomas (Melissa) Hyde, Colesburg, Aaron (Kim) Green, Hiawatha, Sarah (Josh) Urmanski, Elkader. Great-grandchildren Carmen & Anna Berns, Jude Clinton, Alex & Carlie Hyde, Kennedy Bulman, Abigail & Gunner Green and Sawyer Urmanski. Brothers Donald (Helen) Kann, Guttenberg, Owen Kann, Guttenberg, sister-in-law Noreen Rowland, Garnavillo, Lydia Kann, Garnavillo, Betty Kann, Iowa City; and many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

She was preceded by her parents, husband Wilfred, son William, son-in-law Robert Hyde, sister Arlene (Ray) St. John, brothers Virgil (Bud) Kann, Fritz (Rosemary) Kann, Duane Kann, and sister-in-law Gerry Kann.

Mom’s legacy from the world’s view point isn’t much. She had no advanced degrees, wealth or fame, belonged to no prestigious clubs or organizations. But there are a few items worth noting. She was an honest, hard worker, a steadfast friend who genuinely cared for people and a kind person with a great sense of humor. But what we think mom would want most to be remembered for is being a devoted mother, who raised three children on her own, to love their families like she did.

Worldly accomplishments are shallow compared to a legacy like this. Mom, may we live and love our families and friends like you did – we love you.

Visitation will be on Saturday, February 7 at 10:00 am with services to follow at 11:00 at St. Mary’s Church, Guttenberg. Burial will follow at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Garnavillo.
