Wayne Allan Diekman

Wayne Allan Diekman, age 82, of Aplington, IA, was born the son of George and Anna (Wiegman) Diekman on Nov. 19, 1933, Aplington, IA. He received his education and graduated from Aplington High School in 1951. After graduating he furthered his education at Ellsworth Community College. Upon completion Wayne joined the U.S. Army in 1953 and was stationed at Fort Carson in Colorado. After his service to his country he returned home and met the love of his life.

On Feb 8, 1957, Wayne was united in marriage with Janice Okones in Wellsburg, IA. They made their home in Aplington where Wayne joined the family business, Diekman Brothers Grocery. He owned and operated the store from 1957 to 1989. After selling the store he was employed by Allen Hospital in the Environmental Service Department until his retirement in 2003.

Wayne was a member of the Aplington Evangelical Presbyterian Church where he served 2 terms as trustee. He was a 22 year member of the Aplington Volunteer Fire Department, and a life time member of the Aplington Amvets. He enjoyed town team fast pitch softball in his younger years. Wayne truly enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, whether it be his children or grandchildren's events, the annual fishing trip to Minnesota, numerous camping trips with his family, golfing, and having coffee with his friends. He was a fan of the St. Louis Cardinals and the Iowa Hawkeyes.

Wayne died Sunday, December 20, 2015 at Maple Manor Village in Aplington, under the care of Cedar Valley Hospice, after a lengthy battle with pneumonia. He is preceded in death by his wife, of 52 years, Janice, his parents, and siblings; Elmer Diekman, Erv Diekman, and Lorene Vietor.

Wayne is survived by his four children; Scott Diekman of Aplington; Jonie (Alan) Tenney of Aplington; Robert (Ranae) Diekman of Bird Island, MN; and Jason (Julie) Diekman of East Moline, IL; eight grandchildren; Andrew, Kayla, and Colin Tenney; Nicole (Dave) Wasierski, Samantha (Mike Loebs) Diekman, Drew Diekman, Grant and Ellie Diekman; and 4 great grandchildren; Ayden, Owen, Amelia, and Kinsley.

Funeral Services will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday January 2nd at the Aplington Evangelical Presbyterian Church with burial in Pleasant View Cemetery where military rites will be conducted by Aplington Amvets Post 102. Visitation will precede the memorial service from 9:00 - 11:00 a.m. at the church.

Memorials in lieu of flowers will be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice and Aplington Amvets.
