Joan McCall-Dunn

JOAN LEE CHAPMAN MCCALL-DUNN, 80, of Iowa City, died on Dec. 9, 2015, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy. She died from injuries suffered in a fall at her home in November.

Joan was born April 5, 1935 in Springfield, Ohio to William and Melvina Chapman. She graduated from Springfield High School in 1954 and attended Wittenberg University in Springfield. She later attended the University of Iowa.

Living in a number of places across the United States and Canada over her life (Springfield, Ohio; Quebec City, Quebec, Canada; West Lafayette, Indiana; and Sarasota, Florida) she made many friends along the way. She lived in Iowa City, Iowa, for the majority of her years, owning a commercial kennel, Glenheather Kennels. Joan had a tremendous love for dogs in general accompanied by a vast knowledge of all breeds, but especially Kerry Blue Terriers,  having bred and shown numerous champions in that breed. Later she worked at the University of Iowa for more than 28 years as a graphic design artist, Senior Designer for the University, and Art Director for the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (UIHC) winning numerous awards in graphic design competitions for both the University and UIHC. At the University of Iowa, in addition to all other topics, Joan designed for sports, both men and women, designing the original University of Iowa Women's Intercollegiate Athletics logo. Joan remained interested in women's athletics for the remainder of her life, supporting especially women's basketball, but avidly interested in all women's athletic programs as well as men's. At the hospital, Joan designed the UIHC logo which is on the front of the hospital.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her grandmother, Mina Gaines of Springfield, her brother Robert Hasslar, of Sharonville, Ohio and her sister, Margaret Hasslar Rolf, of Covington, Kentucky.

Joan is survived by her  three sons, Richard Samuel McCall of Ames, Iowa, Steven Carl McCall of Pensacola, Florida, and Christopher Andrew McCall of Northumberland, Pennsylvania; grandsons Joseph Mathew McCall of Peachtree City, Georgia, and Quinton McCall of  Northumberland, Pennsylvania; nephew Dr. Robert Terry Rolf of Covington, Kentucky; and a niece, Bobby Hasslar Griswold of Sharonville, Ohio.

Joan has requested cremation of her remains and has asked her son Steven to spread her ashes in the Gulf of Mexico in Sarasota, Florida's Siesta Key. A celebration of life will be held at her home at a later date.

Donations can be made in memoriam of Joan to the University of Iowa Foundation, specifically to the University of Iowa Women's Intercollegiate Athletics program.
