James H. Hiner

James H. Hiner, 93, of Belmont, Wisconsin, passed away on Thursday, April 2, 2015 as he was transported by ambulance to Upland Hills Health, Dodgeville, Wisconsin.

Jim was born on June 18, 1921 in Brownwood, Texas, the son of James and Cleo (Munden) Hiner. He graduated from Davenport High School and attended Cornell College, Mount Vernon, Iowa before enlisting in the United States Marine Corps in May 1941. He played in the Marine Corps band and served as a stretcher-bearer during his campaigns in Tarawa, Saipan and Tinian, and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal in 1944.

Jim earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees at the University of Minnesota, and taught English literature and related subjects for 17 years at Vermillion Community College in Ely, Minnesota and three years at Milton College in Milton, Wisconsin. In the summers, he worked as a canoe outfitter with Border Lakes in Winton, Minnesota. Upon retiring from teaching, he pursued a number of other ventures including manager of the Charles A. Lindbergh Historic Site in Little Falls, Minnesota, and customer service/courier with Federal Express in Sacramento, California and Madison, Wisconsin.

Jim had a passion for living and enjoying life. He was a self-directed learner as well as an educator – pursuing many interests and enthusiasms including language, science and conservation. He was a creative and innovative artist – capturing and reflecting his life experiences through images and words. Jim was a published poet, accomplished musician, humorist and inventive art photographer. He supported the arts and, with his family, regularly attended performances in Minnesota and Wisconsin. He was an avid gardener and gourmet cook. And … he loved The New Yorker.

Jim is survived by his loving wife of 31 years, Marian Maciej-Hiner, his children Susan (Jim) Haynie of Lincoln, CA, Eric (Paula) Hiner of Carver, MN, Mark (Laura Hofer) Hiner of Fitchburg, WI, daughter-in-law Kerry Rahn of Houston, TX, sister Jo Hiner of Minneapolis, MN, grandchildren Derric (Shana) Haynie, Katrina Haynie, Ron (Tessa Anttila) Hiner, Karl (Emily Mercer) Hiner, Jamie (Daniel) Chee, Angela (Fletcher) Groeneman, step-grandchildren Megan (Norm) Kimball, Monica Saralampi, great-grandchildren Austin Haynie, Fern Hiner, Elise Chee, Emery and Felicity Groeneman, step-great-grandchildren Theodore Anttila, Oro Saralampi, Josephine Kimball, nieces Liese (Robert) Doring, Jilda Mastrey, Cara Mastrey, and Mia (Mark) Moyad, sisters-in-law Delores Fussy, Delphine (Edward) Weller, Joyce (Roland) Clark, Jeanne Buchanan – and many extended family members and long-time friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, son Steven Rahn (1989), brothers-in-law Ralph Fussy (1993) and Kelly Buchanan (2001), and niece Tawn Mastrey (2007).

A celebration of Jim’s life will be held on Saturday, April 18 at Folklore Village, 3210 County Road BB, Dodgeville, Wisconsin, starting at 1pm with food and gathering. There will be a program of honoring, remembering and sharing at 2pm.
