Gene Darrol Henning
Gene Darrol Henning, age 82, died April 9, 2015, at Grundy County Memorial Hospital of
natural causes.
Gene was born April 27, 1932 in Iowa City, IA. He was raised in rural Parkersburg by his
parents Harold and Bertha (Stevens) Henning. Bertha died when Gene was 9 years old. In 1951
Harold married Marguerite Fernow when Gene was 16 years old, adding a younger brother and
two older sisters to his family.
He graduated from Parkersburg High School and Coe College. He lived and worked in Cedar
Rapids; Denver, CO; Roswell, NM; and retired in Grundy Center to be near family.
Gene was Display Manager at Killians in Cedar Rapids and Sears in Roswell but said “the best
job I ever had” was at the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art. There, Gene was able to share his
love and knowledge of art with guests of the museum and the Grant Wood Studio.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents and stepmother.
Surviving to miss him are step-siblings Louise (Dale) Morgan, Cedar Rapids; Dorothy (Glen) Rapp, Denver, CO; Austin (Judy) Fernow of Grundy Center; cousins Ron (Miriam) Neessen of rural Waterloo, Carol (Dave) Goodwin of Bourbonois, IL, Lowell (Ruth Ann) Trepp of Reinbeck; and many nieces and
nephews.
Services rendered by Iowa Cremation. A celebration of memories and private burial in the family plot in the Parkersburg cemetery will be held at a later date.
Memorials may be directed to the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art, Cedar Valley Hospice, or the
Grundy County Memorial Hospital.
