Paul Steffen

Paul Gregory Steffen passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on November 21, 2014, in Keystone, Iowa.  He was 93.

Born in Halliday, North Dakota, on August 20, 1921, Paul was raised on his father’s farm and graduated from the local high school in 1939.

Paul served in the Army Air Corps in WW II as an airplane engine mechanic and in supply.   While in the Army he was stationed in the southern Philippines and Australia and was awarded several Service medals.  He was honorably discharged on January 5, 1946.

After his discharge from the Army, he returned to North Dakota, where he met his future wife Elizabeth Elaine Wilhelm.  Their first date was by chance – an impromptu invitation to a dance in Dodge, North Dakota.  It was the first of countless memories they would create.  Elaine and Paul were married on November 18, 1947 in Dodge, North Dakota.  They were married for 67 years.

In 1949 Paul and Elaine settled in Ruthven, Iowa, where their family grew to include seven children.  Paul continued to use his skills as a mechanic working at  Severson’s Garage in Ruthven. He also spent many years as a meat cutter at the Morrell plant in Estherville, Iowa. His last job before he retired was repairing hydrostatic transmissions, pumps, and motors for the Eaton Corporation in Spencer.

Paul took great pride in the accomplishments of his children and grandchildren. Widely dispersed from Washington DC to Colorado, he looked forward to their calls and visits.

A beloved husband and father, Paul is survived by his wife, Elaine, and their children:  Karen Rassler, Dorene Clark, James Steffen, Craig Steffen, Darrell Steffen, Phillip Steffen and Janet Hubbard.  Paul was a cherished grandfather to eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, John Wayne Steffen. Paul was preceded in death by his father, John Henry Steffen; his mother Ruth Irons Steffen; and his sister Adlyn Lucille (Steffen) Severson.

A memorial Mass will be held on Thursday, Dec. 11, 2014, in Belle Plaine, Iowa at St. Michael Catholic church at 10:30.

Visitation will be that morning from 9:30 -10:30 in the church. Burial will take place in Halliday, North Dakota at a later date.

Paul will be missed by his family and many friends.
