Edgar (Ed) Thomas Horn

Edgar (Ed) Thomas Horn died Monday, May 12, 2014, at the age of 98. A Celebration of Life will be from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 17, at VFW No. 788 in Cedar Rapids.

Ed was born Oct. 16, 1915, in New Holland, Ill. He married Ruth Spencer in June 1945. Ruth passed in 1987.

In 1988, Ed met Darlene McDaniel and became devoted friends for years, amazing people on the dance floor and loved the penny slot machines. Ed served in the Army Air Force (T-Sgt) in World War II and was a proud Pearl Harbor survivor, lifetime member of VFW Post 788 and 50 Plus Member Crescent Lodge No 25. Golf was a big part of Ed's life, belonging to Iowa Senior Golf Association, Retired Men's League at Jones and Ellis, receiving Johnnie Walker International Hole In One award Twin Pines 1987 and Iron Byron Award for partici-pating in Senior Men's City Amateur at the age of 90. Ed played golf until the age of 96. Truly a gentleman and sharply dressed man, Ed worked at O'Meara Clothing Company and retired from Armstrong's Department Store in 1987.

Preceding Ed in death were parents, Marshall and Imogene Horn; sister, Vivian Hansel; wife, Ruth Spencer; and stepson, Jack Spencer.

Ed leaves behind a niece, Jo Ann Roberts (Ray) of Dubuque; nephew, Steve Bennis of Colorado; and very special friend, Darlene McDaniel and her family, Kerry and Linda Dills, Don and Bobbi Decker, plus 13 others who called him Grandpa.
Thanks to Mercy Hospice for giving care and comfort during Ed's last days.

Ed lived life to the fullest and will be missed by those who loved him.
