Harlan S. Keltner

Harlan Shelvie Keltner, 90, of Columbus Jct., IA, died Friday, July 25, 2014, at the Colonial Manor Nursing Home (Columbus Jct.) after a battle with cancer.

Harlan was born April 25, 1924, in Grandview, IA, the son of Job and Grace Lucille Hardman Keltner. He married Margie Jordan Keltner on May 21, 1943. They enjoyed 71 years of marriage, 63 of which they spent living at their residence on their family farm.  Harlan graduated from Grandview High School. He began his career as a farmer, as he took a job on his Uncle Paul Beik’s farm. Eventually, Harlan and Margie moved onto their own farm outside of Columbus City. They fed cattle and hogs and farmed their land. Harlan also became a long-standing member of the Kaaba Shriners.  Enjoying the outdoors and, especially, wildlife, Harlan was an avid hunter and fisherman; he spent much time on his own land and exploring other hunting areas around the Midwest. Harlan and Margie also saw the world through their travels, venturing to nearly all 50 states and a handful of countries. Despite the couple’s quest to experience new people and places, Harlan’s preferred spot was on his farm where he could sit under a shade tree and watch his crops grow or cruise the gravel roads in his pick-up truck admiring the rural scenery and chatting with his neighbors. Most will fondly remember Harlan’s hardy chuckle and playful demeanor.

Survivors include his wife, Margie; daughter, Kathy (August) Narmont of Phoenix, AZ; three grandsons, Kyle (Jennifer) Keltner of Oswego, IL, Kasey (Jen) Keltner of Columbus Jct., IA, and Augie Narmont of Phoenix, AZ; two granddaughters, Kameo (Randy) Keltner Cragoe of Eldora, IA and Kally (Mike) Narmont Deymonaz of Phoenix, AZ; two great-grandsons, Ethan Keltner and Griffin Keltner; and two great-granddaughters, Kylee Crable and Brooke Deymonaz. Harlan is also survived by his three younger sisters, Dorothy Webb and Jolene (Tom) Pogemiller of Wapello, and Maxine Cornick of Burlington, IA; and three younger brothers, Clarence Keltner of Columbia, KY, Carl Keltner of Dunedin, FL, and Job “Junior” (Tish) Keltner of Burlington, IA.

Harlan was preceded in death by his son, Kirt Keltner; his parents; and his brother, Don Keltner.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, August 2nd at 10 am at the Columbus Junction United Methodist Church.  A luncheon will follow the service at the American Legion in Columbus Junction.  Memorials will be established.
