Charles W. Zittergruen, 78, of Guttenberg, Iowa passed away Thursday July 17, 2014 in Guttenberg. A Memorial service will be held on Monday July 21, 2014 at 11:00 am at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Guttenberg. A visitation will be held from 9:00 to 11:00 at the church.
Charles William Zittergruen was born on March 11, 1936 to Arnold and Viola (Tomkins) Zittergruen in Guttenberg, Iowa. He proudly served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict.
Charles was united in marriage to Violet Esmann on December 22, 1956 in Dubuque, Iowa. Charles and Vi were blessed with 2 children. Charles and Vi enjoyed going out to eat with family and friends.
Charles served the community as a licensed electrician for many years. He worked at Guttenberg Industries for 27 years prior to his retirement. He then began serving the community by volunteering at the Guttenberg Meal Site. In 2012 he received the Governor’s Volunteer Award for his service.
Charles was a long time member of St John’s Lutheran Church in Guttenberg. Over the last two years Charles had been blessed with the addition of great grandchildren which became his main focus in life.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Violet; son, Dennis (Julie) Zittergruen and daughter, Diane (Audie) Baumgartner all of Guttenberg; grandchildren, Heidi (Chuck) Ploessl, Travis (Amy) Bries, Trey (Corinne) Bries, and Tara (Travis) Augustyn; 6 great grandchildren; sister, LaVonne Witte of Marion; and many other family and friends.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents; a brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Darlene Zittergruen; and brother-in-law, Harvey Witte.
In lieu of plants or flowers the family would request Memorial donations be made in Charles’ honor to the Guttenberg Public Library or the Guttenberg Hospital.
