Russel Earl Cline

Russel Earl Cline, 83, of Winfield (formerly of Muscatine and Columbus City), passed away Wednesday, January 1, 2014 at Sunrise Terrace Care Center, Winfield surrounded by his three daughters.

Mr. Cline was born February 18, 1930 in rural Johnson County, the son of Walter Earl Cline and Mabel Shull Cline.  When Russel enlisted in the Marine Corps and obtained his birth certificate it had been recorded as February 19.  And so instead of marrying his sweetheart B. Jane Parsons the day after his birthday they were united in marriage on his birthday, February 19, 1951 in Wapello, IA.

Russel served his country during the Korean War and was wounded in action receiving a Purple Heart.  He was a farmer all his life.  Russel was a life member of VFW Post 1565 and a member of American Legion Post 27 both in Muscatine.  He was an avid Hawkeye and Chicago Bears football and Cubs fan and enjoyed pheasant hunting in his earlier years.  He was STCC resident carpetball and WII bowling champ and enjoyed when young people would challenge him to a game.  The highlight of Russel‘s last year was going on the September 10 Eastern Iowa Honor Flight to Washington D.C.  He was also honored with being presented a Quilt of Valor.

Those left to honor his memory include his three daughters, Annie and husband Mike Blanchard of Muscatine, Sue Sandoval of Centralia, IL and Kathy Wilkerson of Wapello.  2 grandsons; Cory and wife Michele Stephenson of New Braunfels, TX , Jason and wife Missi Sandoval of Davenport; 2 granddaughters; Sara and husband Tom Riggs of Blue Grass and Lisa Wilkerson of Wapello; 14 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandson.  2 sisters; Alice Garcia of Silvis, IL, and  Carrol and husband Robert Shelangoski of Brighton, IA, sister-in-law Donna Cline of Washington, IA and 2 brothers; Richard of East Moline, IL and Jerry of Brighton, IA, along with several nieces, nephews and special friend Kermit Hotopp.
Russel was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Jane and 4 brothers, Dale, Walter, Kennith and Raymond, brother-in-laws James Garcia Sr and Burton Parsons and sister-in-law Minnie Cline.

A memorial and celebration of life will be held at a later date.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to HCI Foundation, 2910 Westown Parkway, Suite 200, West Des Moines, IA 50266-1332 or Eastern Iowa Honor Flight, P.O. Box 10704, Cedar Rapids, IA 52410.
