Jim Mickle
James was born in Toledo, Ohio to Frank and Ethel Mickle. They later moved to Michigan where he graduated as valedictorian of his class from Clarkston High School. He then attended the General Motors Institute, graduating in 1961. Jim worked for General Motors for 42 years until his retirement in 1998. He accomplished many things at GM including the industry’s first plastic body side panels.
Jim and Marianne married on August 22, 1959 and were married 54 years. Together they had three children: Brian, Laura, and Sara. He had four grandchildren: Alexander, Emma, Julianne, and Mary. Jim and Marianne made their home in the metro Detroit area for 46 years before moving to Marion, Iowa in 2005.
Jim loved his family, auto racing, auto repair, camping, photography, metalworking, woodworking, and sewing. He organized numerous road rallies, participated in Formula 1 and NASCAR races, traveled to 47 of the United States as well as all of the Canadian provinces, and won awards for his photography. He was a man of limitless talents.
Jim has left a legacy of love, laughter, and memories for those who now miss him. He is survived by his wife Marianne Mickle currently of Marion, IA, son Brian (Lorianne) Mickle of West Chester, OH, daughter Laura (Brian) Azelborn of Cedar Rapids, IA, daughter Sara (Douglas) Repen of Farmington, MI, grandson Alexander Mickle of West Chester, OH, and granddaughters Emma Azelborn of Cedar Rapids, IA, Julianne Mickle of West Chester, OH, and Mary Azelborn of Cedar Rapids, IA. He is also survived by his sister Janice (Sam) Beglin of Lansing, MI and numerous in-laws, nieces, and nephews.
A memorial service was held on Sunday, April 6, 2014, at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Cedar Rapids, IA. A memorial service in the metro Detroit area is planned for a later date. Please contact jmf@mikkl.com for service details.
