Gladys Geraldine Brown

Gladys Geraldine Brown died after an extended illness at Israel Hospice House in Ames, Iowa on November 11, 2013. Geri was born on January 25, 1941 in Sallisaw, Okla. to Vernia (Callahan) and Coy Maynard. According to her wishes, she has been cremated and no services are planned.

She was a proud member of the Cherokee Nation. The Maynard family moved to Shafter, Calif. in 1954 where she met and married Hubert Brown, the love of her life, on May 22, 1956 during his service in the U.S. Navy. Together Geri and Hubert raised three children, Debbra, Tim, and Kevin.

Geri was a homemaker all her life who was devoted to friends and family and cared for others with love and compassion. She fed our bodies with her famous biscuits and cocoa, potato salad, and lasagna and lovingly fed our souls with support, wit, wisdom, and joy. In 1976 Geri joined Hubert as a cross-country truck driver and companion; they moved to Ames in 1993.

Geri is survived by her beloved husband Hubert; Debbra Sloan of Ames and her children Bryan (Thomas White) Allen and Ashleigh Sloan; Tim (Brandy) Brown of Kiowa, Kan. and their children Brandi, Amber, Dustin, Lutisa, and Jazzy and five great-grandchildren; and Kevin “Charlie” Brown of Dallas, Texas and his children Amber, Adam, Miranda, Chris, Tony, and Montana and four great-grandchildren. She is survived by her father, Coy Maynard; sisters Erma (Gordon) Ellis, Evie (Tony) Lawrence, and Roberta (Kim) Wilkins; brothers Kurt Maynard and Dewey (Norma) Maynard.

She was preceded in death by her mother; sister Dorothy Moore; brother Lynyrd Maynard; granddaughter Stephanie Sloan; and grandson Todd Brown.

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate contributions to Israel Hospice House.
