Velma Marie Peters
Velma Marie Peters, 88, of Columbus Junction, IA passed away at the Colonial Manor Wednesday December 18, 2013. As were her wishes she will be cremated. A memorial service for both Velma and her late husband Kenneth will be scheduled at a later date.
Velma is survived by her son Edward (Diane) Peters of Hudson, FL; 3 grandsons: Michael (Kimberly) Peters of Fresno, CA, Christopher (Lisa) Peters of Ashton, IA, and Donald (Jenny) Zaehringer of Columbus Junction, IA; granddaughter Kelly Zaehringer-Schnepper of West Liberty, IA; and extended family: Jim and Penny Wellington.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Kenneth Peters, and brother William Curtis Stephenson.
Velma Marie Stephenson was born January 9, 1925 to Karl and Dora (Kerns) Stephenson in Denver, MO. She graduated from Worth County High School in Grant City, MO and went on to attend Northwest Missouri State Teachers College. She taught in rural schools for one year before working a short time as a waitress, then a telephone operator. On January 8, 1950 Velma married Kenneth ‘Kenny’ Lloyd Peters at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, IA. She worked for many years with him doing the books for his plumbing business. Velma was a member of the Eastern Star Organization and the United Presbyterian Church. Her favorite pastime was traveling with her husband. She was privileged to have visited each of the 50 states, 5 islands in the Caribbean, England, Wales, and Scotland. She also enjoyed spending time with her family. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Memorial donations in Velma’s name may be made to the Columbus Junction Fire Department and the Louisa County Ambulance Service.
