Jeanette Jordan Humphrey

Jeanette Jordan Humphrey, 91, of Wapello, Iowa passed away Wednesday October 24, 2012 at the Wapello Nursing and Rehab Center. A memorial service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church in Wapello on Saturday November 3, 2012 at 10:00am. A private family burial will follow. Jeanette is survived by her son Myron "Mike" (Carolyn) Humphrey of Sahuarita, AZ; daughter-in-law Linda Humphrey of El Paso, TX; siblings Lester (Laurel) Barrick of Wapello, IA, Hoyt Barrick of Osage, IA, and Sidney (Betty) Barrick of Sun City, AZ; sister-in-law Virginia Barrick of Muscatine, IA; 8 grandchildren: Cynthia (Timothy) Jones, Melynda (Greg) Peterson, Mark (Joetta) Humphrey, Jennifer (Laren) Larson, Brian (Michele) Humphrey, Thad (Julie) Hock, Vannessa Hulme, and Sarah Hulme; 18 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews with a special thanks going to Bill and Kathy Barrick, Bob and Gale Barrick; and her very special friends Ann and Lorrie Thompson who have watched over her and helped during the last few years. Friend Donna Williams who spent time reading and praying with her. She was preceded in death by her parents Rolland and Edith, her ex-husband Allen Humphrey, son Gary Humphrey, brothers Stanley (Marilyn) and Dalford Barrick, sister Inger (Ralph) Gibson, and an infant sister. Jeanette was born March 2, 1921 to Rolland and Edith (Matthews) Barrick in Wapello, Iowa. She attended the Wapello Community Schools and went on to Southeast Community College in Burlington. In December of 1938, she married Steven Allen Humphrey in Missouri. Jeanette worked for the Wapello School District as a bus driver and cook for 8 years. She went on to work at Thatcher Glass in Muscatine for 6 ½ years before heading back to Wapello to work the next 20 years as the city clerk. Jeanette was a member of the Past Noble Grand Rebekah Lodge 129, and an active member of the First Presbyterian Church in Wapello since 2nd grade. She taught Sunday School, was a member of the choir, and served as a deacon. She was also the Church Treasurer for 16 years and was instrumental along with her mother in organizing the Ladies Guild. In her spare time, Jeanette enjoyed ceramics, mowing her lawn and a devoted Iowa Hawkeye fan. She adored her ''fire-engine red'' house, but what she loved most was her family and spending time with them. Memorials may be directed in Jeanette''s name to Great River Hospice in Burlington, the Wapello Fire and Rescue, and the First Presbyterian Church of Wapello.
