Ted Earl Rogers

Kathy, Kelly, and Joel, Our deepest sympathies, Ted touched so many lives. He truly is a great man and his memory will live on in all of us who had the privilege of knowing him. May you find comfort in knowing that we are all praying for you.

To the Rogers family, Although I never played for Ted, he was a camp coach I had when I was at Marion. Every year I looked forward to working with him because he was so positive. He was always there to offer a little tidbit of knowledge and encouragement. Coach Thurness always gave his participating coaches the opportunity to speak to the entire camp one day a week. Coach Rogers always had something inspirational to say. Not just about football, but about life. He worked with the running backs so I got to know him fairly well. What an incredible coach and gentleman. I looked forward to camp every year due to my love of the sport. He helped cultivate that love of the sport. He certainly made an impact on this former Marion player, and I will always refer to him as "Coach". My condolences to his family, brother Lonnie, who was my coach at Coe. God got a great one in Coach Rogers! God Bless!

Jesus says in John11:25-26,"I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die." Ted was a credit to his family, school and profession. A nice guy!i

The Rogers family mirrored mine of the preceding generation, allowing me to repeatedly experience successes of a coach, sons and the best bunt cake maker and mother.

I can still hear Ted's booming voice sending words of encoragement to everyone that is missing him. Ted was a leader for CPU boys for three decades. As Eisenhower put it "The supreme quality of Leadership is unquestionably integrity. Without it, no real success is possible, no matter whether it is on the section gang, a football field, in an army or in an office" Ted was a true leader with the utmost integrity. He will be missed but never forgotten.

I suppose I have many fond memories of working with Ted, most of them in coaching. After home games I would generally go with Bob Dillon to his house and call in the stats, then go over to Ted & Kathy's to watch some of the game on video. Perhaps the funnest time was during the playoffs, especially 1985 when we won the State championship. We sure spent a lot of time watching scout film on our opponents. Ted couldn't let that go - he was tenacious about planning for the next opponent. I learned a lot from him just going through the process. I also went with him a couple of times to exchange films with another coach early on a Saturday morning - 3 or 4 hour drives! Ted, of course, had a lot of stories to tell (he knew A LOT of people!). A favories story was about Bob Dillon. Seems Ted and Bob went to a coaching clinic together, Ted driving that old tan colored VW Beetle (remember that one?). On the way home Ted stopped at a store and Bob got out to get some refreshments. A minute later, another guy drove up in an identical VW Beetle, parked a few stalls away, and went into a store. A few minutes later, Bob came out, went to the other car, got in and sat and waited (must have thought Ted went somewhere). Ted just sat there and watched, as the guy came out of the store a few minutes later and went to get into his car. There sat Bob in the riders seat. Well, Bob immediately got out of the wrong car and went over and got in the car with Ted. Ted started laughing as Bob just sat down and said something like . . . you s.o.b.! Ah, you gotta love stories. Great memories of a great man. I only regret that I moved away 25 years ago . . . thanks for the memories Ted!

Kathy, A shock to hear of your loss!! Ted was always a "class act" which he tried to pass on to all his athletes, friends, and acquaintences. It was so much fun to be with you two as you started off your married lives and Ted (Theodore, as I called him.) his brilliant coaching carreer. Dean, Norman, Harlan, and I will never forget the night we brought him home and you wouldn't let him in the house. Too bad cell phones weren't popular yet, we could have called and explained why we were late. I used Theodore many times as an example of perserverance to explain to people how it feels to do/teach/demand what you know is right and not get results at first, for a short instance to lose belief in those ideals yourself, but then continue and build to a brilliant, sustained, excellent future and be remembered forever as a teacher of CLASS performance!!! Thanks for the memories, keep in touch. Bill & Carolyn Gast

Kathy, Kelly & Joel. It is with the most deepest of sympathies that I write this message. It was truly one of my greatest pleasures in life having the opportunity to know coach and all of you. Some of my most memorable things were the summers and times that I baby sat Kelly & Joel growing up. Playing football in the endzone's with friends as a kid with the hopes of some day being able to play for coach on the field. Coach was a huge motivator for me and brought out the best in everyone. I am forever grateful that I had the opportunity to play for him and have tired to take a lot of the lessons that he taught me and pass them on. God bless you and all of the rest of your family.

My thoughts and prayers go out to all of you. The loss of Ted is quite saddening. The only blessing I can give is that he is now pain free an able to watch over all of you. My heart goes out to you in your hours of sorrow.

My brother-in-law was a member of his first Center Point team, and my son was a member of his last team. Coach taught us to understand and perfect the fundamentals, stay humble, and give 100%. Those simple principles help guide numerous lives to this day and beyond. Job well done. Rest in peace, Coach. I will miss Ted a lot. He always gave me great advice when dealing with parents and administration. After I became a businessman as well as a coach he was my insurance man as well as a valued customer and friend. He would stop by our store and harrass Moose and myself and always gave us some laughs. He will be greatly missed by both of us.

He always had a smile and was happy to talk to a former student whenever he saw one no matter if it was at an event or out and about somewhere. He was a great man who was well respected and loved by all who had the honor of knowing him. My deepest condolences to his family...

Ted's passing is not only a loss for his family but also for the "coaching family" across the state. He was a great coach and a great competitor. In all the football games we played against Center Point, he never displayed anything other than "class", a gracious respect which he shared with everyone. He might have won the game but you never felt beaten. You were left with a feeling of being glad to have been in a game with a truly great leader young men. How fortunate it was for those who played for him, for the school, the community and all those he touched. God bless, Ted.

I consider myself as a long time Upper Iowa friend and admirer of Ted. I was gone when Ted was at UIU, but I became a friend and supporter of his. I knew him as a pleasant man, great coach, and fine gentleman. You couldn't talk about high school football, coaches and teams without Ted's name being brought up as a true leader and representative of ther best. I offer my sympathy and sorrow to you, your family, and all those who shared Ted's life.

What a beautiful difference a single life made in the lives of so many. I was a student at Center Point graduating in the early 80s and made a life in the military then at the Seattle Times. In those early days my leaves back to Iowa always included a trip back to the school. It was during those visists I finally realized how FORTUNATE I was to have been a student of not only Mr Rogers, but of Center Point Consolidated as it was called back then. Teachers like Mr Rogers, Mr Robert Howard Bowers, Mr Yockey, and the inimitable Mrs Cook set the bar so HIGH that I hope those who follow didn't find it intimidating. Mr Rogers, the words of advice you gave me regarding finding my path and sticking to it have never been more relevant to me than now. I thank you and want to wish your family my sincerest condolences.
