Virginia Spiegel Woodard, 65, died Mar. 22, 2012, at her home, Iowa City, Iowa. The wake will be held at 3-8 p.m. with a Prayer Service at 7 p.m. on Friday, Mar. 30, 2012, at St. Mary''s Church, 228 E. Jefferson, Iowa City, IA 52245. The funeral Mass will be celebrated at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Mar. 31, 2012, at St. Mary''s Church. A reception will follow Mass at Regina High School. A private burial will take place at a later date at St. Joseph cemetery, Farley, IA. Virginia was born in Dubuque, IA on January 15, 1947, to Carl and Beatrice (Sweeney) Spiegel. She was a member of the Sisters of Charity, BVM (1965-96). She married Dr. Fredrick Woodard on July 3, 1999. Virginia taught at Kapaun-Mt. Carmel High School, Wichita (1970–73) and Wahlert High School in Dubuque (1973-85). She completed the doctorate in Family Counseling in the College of Education,The University of Iowa in May 1989. From 1989 to 1996, she taught at Clarke College, Dubuque, Iowa. After three years as Visiting Assistant Professor in The University of Iowa College of Education, Virginia assumed the position of Curriculum Coordinator in the College of Medicine in the fall of 1999. She worked in the College of Medicine until the on-set of her illness in 2010. Her parents preceded her in death. She is survived by husband, Fredrick and his children, Adrienne, Iowa City; Fredrick, Jr., Boston, Mass; Rachel, Iowa City; Erika, Kansas City, Mo.; Jon, Cincinnati, Ohio: and Jarilyn, Iowa City; and by her sisters, Carol Spiegel, BVM, Oak Park, IL; Jeanne Kline, Pewaukee, WI; and five nieces and their families.
