Karen was born on November 10, 1945 in Donahue, Iowa to Gunner and Ethel (Brotherton) Nelson. She married Gary W. Suffel on July 27, 1985 in De Witt, Iowa.
Karen is survived by his husband; Gary Suffel of DeWitt, Iowa; 2 children; Kathy Westerhof (Scott) of Pleasant Hill, Iowa, William Elsner (Angie) of North Liberty, Iowa; 2 grandchildren; Jacob Westerhof of Pleasant Hill, Cora M. Elsner of North Liberty; Siblings; Carl Nelson (Latina) of Ennis, TX., Dorothy Potter (Bob) of Davenport, IA, Mary Nelson of Maquoketa, IA, Jon Nelson (Paula) of Conroe, TX, Edwin Nelson (Mary Ellen) Chicago, Ill, Sheryl Hagge (Tom) Durant, IA and Lori Kenniker (Ken) Ft. Meyers FL.
Karen is preceded in death by her parents, brothers and sister; Gunner, Richard, Donna and Eric.
