Harland Elmer Hetzler
Hettzler Family, We were saddened to read about the death of Harland. Both Mary Jane and I remember his impact on the community of Monticello and his great energy and spirit. Our best wishes to you as you mourn your loss. Our regrets to you, due our winter location In NM, we will be unable to attend his memorial service . Tom Greenawald
We were so sorry to hear about Harland. He was such a dear man, so friendly, so caring. You are all in our thoughts and prayers. With Deepest Sympathy, Greg & Deb Guilford
Harlan, you will be missed at the Camp Courageous board meetings. There will be no one to adjourn the meeting. I feel fortunate that I have 3 wood carvings that you did and one repair job you did for me. I know that you will be in a better place now and that you and your lovely wife will be together again. Thanks so much for being such a good friend to me.
I have had the privilege of knowing Harlan through John McDonald Hospital and Camp Courageous. He was devoted to all of his endeavors. I was active in the American Cancer Society with Lenore. Both Harlan and Lenore are very special and will always be remembered!
I am sending this for my father Robert Binggeli who grew up with Harlan near Muscatine. Harlan and my Dad went to church and played basketball together. They were very close friends as kids and then as time passed as adults they went their seperate ways. Fortunately a few years ago their paths crossed and they had a very nice visit. He enjoyed that visit so much and I am so glad they had that time together. He is also 91and you just never know what tomorrow will bring. His health is still good. He wanted to send his sympathy to the family and said his sisters would know him. From our entire family we wish you all well. Hold on to the great memories as my Dad did. It sounds like he was a wonderful person. The Binggeli family
What amazed me more about Harland Hetzler was all the wonderful things he accomplished after most people slow down and retire around 65. From Lions to the Chamber to the Hospital and as one of my bosses at Camp Courageous we always enjoyed our time together. The most special times were when we would spend an afternoon together at his home visiting about life....he always had time to visit and help. I remember when Harland joined the Board of Directors of Camp Courageous, where he served for over 20-years. He was asked to join by Dr. Earl DeShaw. In his petition to join the board Harland wrote of how the camp had been close to his heart and how he had supported it since it began. "I have always had the deepest admiration for those who work directly with the campers." He was along side Leigh Clark when he founded the Camp Courageous Fruitcakes and was in charge of mixing the candied green and red cherries all these years....a very sticky job! Harland taught our son, at the elementary school age, lessons on wood carving. His wood work is a part of his legacy he leaves behind in his unique and beautiful pieces. Everyone was thrilled for his 90th birthday party to receive one of his unique and special carvings. Harland was always a kind and generous man with his time and his resources. What a beautiful legacy Harland and Lenore leave behind for all of us to benefit from.
Thinking of your family during this time of loss.
We admired Harlan for his caring ways, his artistic talents, his love of life and the vitality he brought to everything he did which included all his church and community services. He had such a sparkle in his eye whenever he talked with us! Although we only knew him and Lenore for a few years from 1980 to 1998 we are sure he will be greatly missed! Our sincere sympathies to his family and friends.
