Richard Bateman

Richard C. Bateman, 72, of Independence passed away peacefully on August 16, 2012 at St. Luke''s Hospital in Cedar Rapids from complications of lung cancer surrounded by his family. Per his request there will be no service at this time. Dick was born October 16, 1939 in Charles City, Iowa. His parents were Violette Isham Bateman, Richard C. Isham, Stepfather Jack L. Bateman and Stepmother Wilma Isham. After graduation from Lincoln High School in Webster City he joined the U.S. Army spending most of his enlistment in Munich, Germany. Later he joined the U.S. Air Force in Denver, CO, and was stationed at Altus AFB, OK. In 1961 he married Jean Berven from Stanhope. They had two children: Trent Bateman, Salt Lake City, Utah and Jill (Rich) Haberkorn, Clayton, North Carolina. He lived most of his life in the cities of Denver & Grand Junction, Colorado and Salt Lake City, Utah where he was employed in the Industrial Electrical business. His passions included reading, golf, football, history, travel and, most of all, his grandchildren: Andrew, Abbie, Alexander & Aaron Haberkorn. He is survived by his wife, children, grandchildren, sisters Diane (Carl) Huerta - Denver, CO, Carolynn (Paul) Pitman - Manchester, MA, Jane (Robert) Wheatley - Reno, NV and brothers William (Lynn) Isham, Jonathan (Janet) Isham and Christopher Isham - all of Independence, IA, in-laws Boyd and Ruth Berven - Webster City and brother- in- law Bruce (Ann) Berven of Ankeny plus his nieces, nephews and many friends he made along the way. He was preceded in death by his parents. A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
