Martin A. Wilkens
Wow, sometimes we just wait too long. I was planning a road trip this winter and planned to pass thru iowa. Thought it would be fun to try and look up Marty, [the only army friend I cared to see again]. I have stopped and visited twice since Nam. once in my jeep on the way back from Ft Carson when I was discharged and once on my bicycle on a trip from Buffalo to Tucson in the mid 70s. How sad I feel not be able to renew that old friendship. Marty could always make me laugh even in the tough times. I don't know if we were the best of soldgers but we did our jobs well and got out alive. Like marty I was given 2 bronze stars and a purple heart. I always felt all I did was my job the medals ment little to me. The expearance and the friendships was valueable though. So what do you say about someone you haven't seen in 35 years? Is he still the same person? I bet he was. Down to earth, dry humor with a quiet laugh. railling against the establishment, battleing regulations, going his own way, loving life with a soft intrusion on his surrondings. My sympathies to the family and loved ones batch
Marty, The class of 1968 at West Liberty High School was saddened by our loss of you. I hope you have found the peace you have searched for all these years. May you be blessed with rest and calm. for the class. Dave Baker
