John Albert Greenlee

John Albert Greenlee, 87, of Hiawatha, formerly of Belle Plaine, died at Northbrook Care Center, Tuesday, November 1, 2011. Memorial Services: 11 a.m. Thursday at First Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Ted Miller. Friends may call after 10 a.m. Thursday at the church. Iowa Cremation is entrusted with arrangements. Survivors include his wife, Marian, of 68 years; children, Linda Abernathey and Mary (John) Tilton, all of Hiawatha, Dennis (Donna) Greenlee of Belle Plaine, Marc (Barbara) Greenlee of Vinton, and Bob (Luann) Greenlee of Cedar Rapids; fourteen grandchildren; and sixteen great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents. John was born November 20, 1923 in Albia to Huron and Ethel Greenlee. He married Marian Radeke in Dayton, OH on December 12, 1942. He was employed at Wright Air Field in Dayton, OH before becoming a Navy Seabee during WWII spending time in Hawaii, Tinian, and Okinawa. After the service, he and Marian returned to Belle Plaine where he worked for the United States Post Office as a rural mail carrier, retiring after 32 years in 1987. He was a loyal Cubs fan and enjoyed watching and feeding his birds. John was a loving and dedicated husband, father, and grandfather and will be missed. The family would like to thank the staff at Northbrook Care Center and Hospice of Mercy for the loving care they gave to John. A memorial fund has been established.
