Glenn Richard Morris

Glenn Richard Morris, embraced 75 years of life, before peacefully and finally hanging up his cowboy hat on July 18th, 2011. He graced this world on July 21, 1935, the son of Harold and Edna Morris, and the brother of Melvin and Carolyn, all of whom, predeceased him. He will be genuinely missed by his children, Craig Alan Morris, Christie Anne Gales and Corinne Anne Railey; his love, Lois Price; his grandchildren John David, Mary, Benjamin, Zachary and Sabrina; his constant canine companion Sophie, his horse Rose and more close friends than can be counted. In his early years, Glenn was a Paratrooper for the U.S. Army, having made numerous jumps. He joined the military just after graduating from Quasqueton Consolidated School in 1953 and remained in the Army for three years. After leaving military service, Glenn attended the University of Iowa. Thereafter, he spent time trimming trees, working at Linkbelt Speeder, and took his first shot at running a tavern in Lisbon, Iowa The majority of his years were then spent creating duct work as a Union Sheet Metal Worker for Local 263 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He made a home and a family with Colleen F. Morris, his wife of 33 years. Eventually, he returned to his roots following in the footsteps of his mother and grandparents as a third-generation bar owner. He then purchased a local bar and grill in Shellsburg, Iowa. The Queen Bee thrived under Glenn''s proprietorship for ten years, and along the way he collected numerous lifelong friends. Glenn was never too busy to lend an ear or tease you a bit if you crossed his path. He retired to Palo, Iowa with the last love of his life, Lois Price. He never overlooked an opportunity to tease her and Lois, his match, gave it right back. Their devotion to one another was apparent to anyone with eyes. Glenn took pride in being a loving, active and supportive father and loyal friend. He relished the role of grandfather with the same zeal as he did everything present in his life. He did not hesitate to teach them to fish, canoe, hunt or ride a horse and was eternally open to new experiences himself, like learning to snow ski in his mid-fifties. He fancied himself a cowboy, and possessed the horse, buggy, hat, boots and belt buckle to prove it. Many a trail ride in Missouri found Glenn entertaining the pack on his buckboard. Likely, he would have been strumming his guitar and singing country music. Glenn supported many organizations including NRA, Isaac Walton League and even sponsored a child from age three to eighteen through Children International. His generosity was unmatched in spirit, life and love. “Let no one weep for me, or celebrate my funeral with mourning; for I still live, as I pass to and fro through the mouths of men.” --Quintus Ennius A celebration honoring and remembering Glenn''s life will be held on Saturday, July 23rd at the American Legion Hall, Shellsburg, Iowa from 2pm to 5pm. Military rites will be performed at 3pm. In lieu of flowers, donations are welcome to the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House or Children International.
