Lester A. Walby

Lester A. Walby, 87, a resident of Northbrook Manor Care Center, died September 30, 2010 following a short illness. A graveside service will be held at a later date at Frankville Cemetery. Arrangements entrusted to Iowa Cremation. Surviving are his children, Mark Walby and wife Mary Beth of Hayward, CA; Diane Walby of Cedar Rapids; grandchildren Jessica and Jason; great grandchildren Jayden and Grady; one sister, Doris Ellis of Dewitt; ex-wife Frances Walby; close friend and companion, Ruth; as well as numerous extended family members. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Dorothy Waters, a brother Leland Walby, his wife Dorothy A. Walby, and his daughter Linda. Lester was born January 23, 1923 in Postville the son of Alwin and Charlotte (Peck) Walby. He served his country honorably in the United States Army during WWII. He was employed as a Regional Salesman for 20 years and as the District Manager for 5 years at Watkins Products of Winona, MN. He later worked for 7 years as a Correctional Officer at the Anamosa State Penitentiary. Following retirement, he also managed an apartment complex for 5 years. He was a member of the American Legion Hanford Post #5, the Elk’s Club, and the Eagles Club. He enjoyed gardening, bowling, country music, playing cards, and traveling to Padre Island with family in the winter. He also enjoyed attending concerts in Branson, Missouri. Les was a wonderful father who lived a long happy life, but will be greatly missed by his family. Les’ family would like to extend special thanks to the staff of Northbrook Manor Care Center for their kind and compassionate care.
