Carroll "Gene" Moore

Carroll Eugene "Gene" Moore, son of Hollis Carey and Madge (Van Winkle) Moore was born March 28, 1923 on the family farm in Rose Hill, Mahaska Co., Iowa. Gene was the third of five children. He attended the old Rose Hill School and graduated from Fremont High School in 1942. He worked with his fathers and brothers on the family farm near the Ottumwa airport prior to joining the Marine Corp. in May of 1945. He remained stateside and was discharged in August of 1946. He returned to Mahaska Co. and the family farm. He soon met the love of his life, Shirley Asthore Shipler of Ottumwa. Their first date, in the spring of 1950, was attending the Elbon Fair together. They were soon married April 7, 1951. Gene''s and Shirley''s family grew with the first son, Stephen Craig, born 10/14/52 and then David Linn, born 7/27/55. Gene loved farming, but decided to move to a bigger home in Hedrick in 1961. He and Shirley remained in Hedrick until October of 2009 and then moved to New Sharon. His favorite hobby was meeting the farmers every morning for coffee and discussing everything from crops to politics. He was self employed in farm related businesses and never retired. In addition to working many long hours, Gene volunteered at the community center in Hedrick for 15+ years preparing and delivering meals to shut-ins. Gene is survived by his wife of 59 years, Shirley, his two sons Stephen (Peggy) of Scottsdale, Arizona and David of Everett Washington, his sister Kathleen (Ernest) Nelson of Fairfield, and his brothers Robert (Mary Ellen) of Williamsburg and George (Helen) of Ottumwa. Gene and Shirley have three beautiful granddaughters, Aranya (Al) Geis, of Higley, Arizona, Rattana (Gil) Manolo, of San Clemente, California and Achara Haire, of San Francisco, California; and four great grandchildren, Cory Haire, Shauna Geis, Brandon and James Manolo. He is preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Hollis Jr. Gene was admitted to the Hospice of Pella, Comfort House, on October 21, 2010. He passed away on November 4, 2010 at the age of eighty-seven. A Memorial service will be held on Monday, November 8, 2010 at 11 AM at Lacey Methodist Church in Lacey with Pastor Jason Guztmer officiating. Gene will be remembered for his unabashed devotion to his wife and his children. He was the model husband and father. Next to his family, farming, serving others, and a long day of honest work was closest to his heart. However, it was his kind and gentle sense of humor and his humility that made Gene so loveable and unique. He will be mourned by all who knew him. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers a contribution to Lacey United Methodist Church, Lacey, Iowa or Hospice of Pella, Comfort House, 505 Union St. Pella, Iowa 50219.
