Alice Marie Bates

Alice Marie Bates, 74, went to be with our Lord, May 2, 2009, at home in Jewell surrounded by her family, after a year long battle with cancer. A memorial for Alice will be held at Bethesda Lutheran Church in Jewell, Iowa on Saturday, May 16, 2009 at 11 AM. Alice was the fourth child of a family of ten born to Orval & Gertie (Sleper) Buffington. She spent her younger years on a farm near the small town of Crystal Lake, Iowa. In her early adult years she worked at Winnebago where she learned to sew. She later became an expert seamstress & operated a thriving custom upholstery shop in her home in Moingona where her & her husband resided for 30 years. Alice enjoyed the love of her family & especially the closeness of her children. During the final year of her life, she enjoyed the visits & Christian fellowship of her church friends and family. She was preceded in death by her husbands, her parents, & her oldest brother, Lee. Alice is survived by her three children, Donna Cervene, Douglas Bartleson, & Robin Roths, all of Jewell, Iowa; her step children, Jerry Bates of Florida, Ava Wolfe of Kansas, Twilene Augustus of Kansas, and Sheila McGuire of Davenport, Iowa; grandchildren, Dawn Dunmire, Jayson Caudle, Adam McGuire, Jade McGuire; five great grandchildren; as well as her eight siblings, Lois Lonning, Marlyn Buffington, John Buffington, Iola Schaefer, Forrest Buffington, Beryl Buffington, Sandra Brunson, and Sharon Grimm.
