Bennett Miller Fischer

Bennett Miller Fischer, 84, died September 18, 2008 at Virginia Gay Home Health Annex in Vinton, IA. In respect of the family''s wishes there will be no service or visitation. Private family burial services will be held at a later date. Bennett was born on September 13, 1924 in Vinton, IA to Karl and Doris Fischer. He graduated from Roosevelt High School in Des Moines and later served in the Air Force in World War II as a bombardier. Bennett flew twenty missions over Europe, including two Berlin raids - Munich and the infamous Dresden raid. He reached the rank of captain and was awarded the Air Medal with two clusters. On April 2, 1947, Bennett was united in marriage to Yvonne Livingston in the little chapel of the Congregational Church in Iowa City. He graduated from the University of Iowa with a BS in Engineering and was a member of the Phi Gamma Delta social fraternity. In 1960 Bennett graduated from the University of Iowa Law School. Bennett worked at the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company in Akron, OH, Hardware Mutuals Insurance in Stevens Point and Appleton, WI, and the Fischer Law Office, from which he retired in 2003. He was active in the community, serving on the Cemetery Board, the Home Savings and Loan Board in Vinton and Waterloo, in the American Legion, and as the State President of the Iowa Municipal Attorneys. Bennett served as city attorney for many years in Vinton and was awarded a key to the city on his retirement. Activities Bennett enjoyed included traveling to Europe and throughout the USA, golf (where he shot a hole in one), and tandem parachute jumps, one with his son Ross. Bennett is survived by his wife, Yvonne; three sons, Ross (Sue) of Olathe, KS, Robert (Linda) of Vinton, and Thomas (Julie) of Phoenix, AZ; eight grandchildren; two sisters, Margaret Ann Taylor and Judy Hirsch; and one brother, Karl.
