Basil D. Smith, 78, 9516 Eldora Rd, Hudson, IA died Friday, September 19, 2008, at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home in Waterloo, IA. Per his wishes Basil has been cremated. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 27, 2008 at 11:00 A.M. at St. Timothy Lutheran Church located at 1 Thelma Court in Hudson. Family will greet friends and family one hour before the service. Inurnment will be held at the Lincoln Township Cemetery. Survivors include his wife Betty Smith of Hudson; daughter Kim Goodenbour and husband Greg of Reinbeck, IA; two granddaughters Kayla and Emily Goodenbour; and one brother Darrell Smith and wife Sharon of Colesburg, IA; several nieces and nephews and his dog Bear. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Betty Barman, and nephew Jerry Basil Barman. Basil Dale Smith was born June 5, 1930 in Waterloo, Iowa the son of Basil and Grace (Simmons) Smith. He was united in marriage to Betty Jane Hamm on November 12, 1950 in Waterloo, IA. He served his country honorably in the United States Army during the Korean War. Basil worked for the Chicago Central Railroad as a yardmaster from 1949 till his retirement 1992. He was a member of the Hudson St. Timothy Lutheran Church, and the Hudson Amvets 82. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend to many. He will be greatly missed by all. In lieu of flowers memorial donations are to be made to the Cedar Valley Hospice of Waterloo or St. Timothy Lutheran Church of Hudson in Basil''s honor.
