Avan Floyd Bates

Avan F. Bates, 84, of Boone, died Sunday, March 30, 2008, at the Boone County Hospital following a long illness. Per his wishes, he was cremated. A memorial service will be held at 2 PM on July 27, 2008 at Kelley Shelter House, Kelley, IA. Inurnment will be in the Walnut Grove Cemetery just outside of Kelley. The Cremation Society of Eastern-Central-Western Iowa is assisting with arrangements. Survivors include his loving wife, Alice; 1 son, Jerry Bates of Florida; 3 daughters, Ava Wolfe and Twilene Augustus both of Witchita, KS, and Sheila McGuire of Bettendorf; 2 step-daughters, Donna Cervene and Robin Roths both of Jewell; 1 step-son, Doug Bartleson of Jewell; 1 brother, Don Bates of Chilton, WI; 1 sister, Jenny Milton of Cañyon City, CO; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great grandchildren. Avan was preceded in death by his parents; 2 brothers; and 2 sisters. Avan Floyd Bates was born August 21, 1923 in Ames, the son of Arthur and Lois Wills Bates. He married Alice Buffington on December 23, 1985 in Jefferson, Iowa. Avan was a Navy veteran of WWII. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and spending time with those he loved. He also enjoyed John Wayne movies, old westerns, and old country music. Avan worked in the maintenance department in the power plant at Iowa State University.
