Adrian Rittenmeyer

Lifelong Iowa Citian, Adrian F. Rittenmeyer, 92, passed away Wednesday, March 5, 2008 at the Solon Nursing Care Center in Solon, Iowa. Per his wishes, Adrian was cremated. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 A.M. April 25, 2008 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, 630 E. Davenport Street in Iowa City. A reception and luncheon at the church will follow. Adrian was born July 1, 1915 in Iowa City, the son of Albert and Bess (Englert) Rittenmeyer. He married Ruth Genevieve Brandstatter on April 3, 1937 in Iowa City. Ruth preceded Adrian in death on November 30, 2006. Adrian attended St. Mary High School, where he lettered in basketball, and graduated in 1933. He joined the Iowa City Fire Department in 1937 and served until his retirement in 1971, rising to the position of Fire Chief during his tenure. Thereafter, he became Stack Supervisor at the University of Iowa Library until 1981. Adrian was a faithful member of St. Wenceslaus Church for most of his life, serving as an usher and member of the Holy Name Society. He enjoyed reading, square dancing, birds, pool and assisting Ruth with her quilting projects. Survivors include two sons, Gary (Diane) Rittenmeyer of Chelan, Washington, and Steve (Mary Ann) Rittenmeyer of Hot Springs Village, Arkansas; granddaughter Christine (Matt) West of Carnation, Washington; grandson Tyson Rittenmeyer of Boulder, Colorado; one brother, Ted Rittenmeyer of Iowa City and many relatives in the Iowa City, Coralville and Cedar Rapids area. In addition, Adrian is survived by step grandsons Troy (Ingrid) Webster of West Palm Beach, Florida and Bradley Webster of Kirkland, Washington; and step great grandson James Webster of West Palm Beach. In addition to his wife Ruth, Adrian was preceded in death by his parents Albert and Bess Rittenmeyer; daughter Ruth Ann Rittenmeyer; and four brothers, Bernard, Lou, Dean and Kenneth Rittenmeyer.
