Penny was a renaissance woman with wisdom, a loving heart and a keen mind, always concerned about the human state and always doing her part to improve the world. She was a devoted friend and showed great kindness to my mother. I will treasure all those memories plus our shared involvement with Temple Judah, the Interreligious Council of Linn County, Jewish mysticism. May her memory always be for a blessing. Shalom, Salaam, Peace-- She really did live that.

I remember the many, many nights we met with Penny, studying, discussing and learning about Process Philosophy. The world is ever becoming and we move on without her, but we remember her with love.

A hell of a good woman! Stright arrow, clear, no deceit in her bones at all. A rare one. She shall indeed be missed.

Penny was a mentor and supporter for me. We shared a passion for Process Theology. She came into my life at the perfect time. The Process Theology Network became an affiliate of the UUA in 1989 much to her credit. She collaborated with me and others creating PT events at the UU General Assembly... a very creative process. Penny's energy, vision, and courage inspired me. Her gifts live on in all of us. My thoughts go out to Penny's family. In loving process, Barbara Booth Keiller, PhD

My first memories of Mrs. Binger was as the mother of my best friend in first grade. She was a loving caring mother who actually sewed dresses, packed lunches and cooked from scratch. I got to know Penny as an adult when she moved to Berkeley to study for the ministry. I am still amazed that a woman old enough to be my mother would set out on such a journey at that time in life. She was brave! She walked miles to school since she didn't drive. We had dinner once at a restaurant she'd passed with table clothes, saying it couldn't be too bad. After waiting for an hour or so for a table, we discovered it was one of the new California Cuisine (expensive) restauarants! I saw her several times in Cedar Rapids when my dad drove her to the printer and post office to mail the League of Women Voters newsletter. Penny was an inspiration, never afraid of intellectual challenges or afraid to make daunting life decisions. Binger Kids: I am so very sorry for your loss. Your mom was one in a million. I'm so lucky to have known her both when I was a child and especially as an adult. Martha Ely Goralka

It's truly hard to imagine how many lives were touched by Penny. Each of us better for it as we became wiser, more loving, and thoughtful toward others. She taught us that one person can make a difference. That social justice was a matter of individual action. And that the world becomes better as we believe we can make it that way. She lived as an example of one who saw diversity in thought, soul or circumstance as something to admire rather than fear. Perhaps as we all reflect on her passing we might find one small way to be more accepting, act in greater kindness, and give without condition. For in any of these considerations we might move from missing a dear friend to remembering what made her so special.

Penny and I overlapped in our ministry training at Starr King School for Ministry. I was only 27 and she was nearly 60; she actually intimidated the hell out of me with her unbelievably straight gaze and cut-through-the-superficial zingers. I have long been out of touch with her, to my regret; but it is amazingly easy to evoke her face in my mind's eye and to hear her voice. She was a blessing; she was a truth-teller. Those of you who had her all or most of your lives (as mother, grandmother, friend)have been lucky beyond the norm. I am sure she knew how loved she was. May you all feel the same as you walk through your grief.

What a thoughtful and caring mentor Penny was for me when I first became the parish minister at the Peoples Church in Cedar Rapids. And then Penny retired to CR and joined Peoples, and I had a wonderful colleague in the congregation. I was inspired by her passions for civil liberties and interfaith work, and was moved to learn later that her deep discernment had led to her conversion to Judaism. I am so sorry to hear of her death and extend my sympathy to her family and many friends. Sincerely, Linda Hansen
