As I was growing up, the Hveems lived less than a mile north of my family's farm. They were our very good neighbors, and we helped each other whenever we could. Howard was about 9 years older than I was, and a boy, so I regarded him with awe. I moved far from Osage after college, but returned to live here a few years ago. I got to talk a bit with Joyce during the brief time she lived at Faith Home. She recalled how my brother Tom and I were shy and wary when we first started riding the big schoolbus. Howie and Gary, thank goodness, watched out for us. Howie must have at some point decided he wanted to be called "Howard", but to me he will always be "Howie", the good-looking older boy who helped Hans when he bailed hay for the neighborhood. I think I can see him now in a sweaty white tee-shirt and dirty jeans. I thought he was very cool.

I can remember Howie could always tell the best Olie and Lenna jokes and he even used the accent to make them sound so much better. One time while in Decorah I found a book of the jokes and had to buy for him. He loved it. I have been thinking of all the good times we have had over the years working together and there are many. He was a good listener and never had anything bad to say about anyone. I am sure he will be missed by many.

Marcia, Gary, and families, May God comfort you in your sorrow. I was privileged to have Howie as a classmate and friend. He was my escort to Homecoming our senior year when he found out I had no date. I became acquainted with your mother at the Osage Rehab. How she loved to talk of Howie's faithful help on the farm in later years, when weather was moving in and the beans needed to be harvested. She said Howie would come to Osage after he'd worked all day and drive combine all night... She was so proud and grateful for the blessing of all three of you children and your wonderful families. I enjoyed seeing all of her treasured pictures and hearing the family history. I was hearing Howie's story. Rick, Skip, and I all felt blessed to have had Christian parents in picture book Osage and the surrounding farms as our place to grow up. Love in Christ, Marge (nee Kelley) Johnsten

Dear Howard's family, You have our deepest sympathy. Howard was not only a salesman to me, he was a friend of my family. He went above and beyond his job. His memory will live forever. I not only talked to him on the phone at work a lot about work but about my wife and four kids. We spent many weekends at his cabin on the Mississippi, our kids still talk about going to "Howard’s cabin" and fishing with the "bamboo poles". We met up with Howard many times on the river with our boats and went to Iowa Football games with him. We had not kept in contact with Howard in last few years but the Saturday after he died we were driving through Marquette, talked about Howard and when we got home we had your message on the phone that Howard had died. He must have been watching over us. Our caring thoughts are with you right now. Chuck & Sue Hubbard and family Exide Battery Manchester, IA

Dear Gary and Marcia--and your families: I grieve with you in the death of Howie. My memories of him are good and always with a smile for he had a glint in his eye that kept things lively. Not too long ago I had a chat with him that was most enjoyable. He still possessed a free spirit and zest for living, especially outdoor life! It is not that long since you lost your Mom too so the family circle has suddenly grown smaller. May all the daily miracles reflecting God's presence surround you with comfort and peace. With deep affection, Dorcas

Howard and I only knew each other for a short period of time yet he left a huge impact on my life. His light hearted humor and visits will be very missed. He had interactions with many people that I know and quickly came to become known as “Howie” the fun loving guy who new how to laugh. I hope that everyone remembers what a wonderful person we lost and we will keep him in our hearts forever.

Howard was a great friend, I worked with him for more years than I can count. His humor was always gift that he had. Andrea had mentioned in her tribute you never called him during "Price is Right" but occasionally he would call me saying "Jim-- Barkers Beauty's are looking real good today--I mean really good!" I called Howard "You Old Sky Pirate" He would always smile and respond with a joke, usually a little dirty but always end with us both laughing sometimes till tears would roll down our faces. Howard, you old sky pirate, you will be missed by all you have touched.

Hi Gary & Fran: I saw the obituary in the paper for your brother, Howard, & wanted to send you my con-dolences. I think of you every now & then especially since my son married a gal from Osage. Her maiden name is Thome. I don't know if you knew this, but Gene passed away in 2004 from complications of lung cancer. I miss him so much each & every day. Again, I'm very sorry about your brother. I hope that you both are well & happy. Sincerely: Sharon

I loved Howard. We seemed to be cut from the same cloth. Howard knew a lot of people I did. In our short friendship, we both had a good time remembering good times back in the 60's & 70's, remembering friends who are now lost. We talked of fishing, camping,& going north to WI. Howard was "down home" and easy to talk to. He came into my workplace about twice a month, & I always looked forward to seeing him. He was a "Tough cookie", & I will miss him a lot.

Howard and I always joked and said we would go to the Veterans Home in Marshalltown in our elderly years. We would tell each other Army stories, smoke cigarettes and drink beer. We worked together for over ten years. It was an honor and pleasure to have him as my friend. I will miss you, Howard.

Howie will be missed by all of us still at BDI (Bearing Service). We enjoyed his visits after he retired and we'd laugh about old times up at the river. We knew not to call him during Price is Right or Kelly and Regis. He even brought the bunny in for Jim's retirement party last year!! He was a good friend to all of us and he will be missed.
