August E. Knoll, 65 of Wheatland died unexpectantly on Thursday, February 7, 2008 at his home. Memorial service will be at 11:00 AM on Saturday, February 16, 2008 at St. Paul''s United Church of Christ in Wheatland. Friends may visit with the family after 10 AM on Saturday at the Church. Reverend Laird Keever will officiate. The Cremation Society of Eastern-Central-Western Iowa is in charge of arrangements. Survivors include his mother, Edna of Grimes, two brothers, Eric (Kim) of Toddville, Philip of Grimes and two sisters, Ruth (Merle) Reingardt of Iowa Falls and Carla (Dennis) Prather of Ankeny. He is also survived by a niece and six nephews. He was preceded in death by his father. August was born on November 11, 1942 in Des Moines, the son of Ernest and Edna Forret Knoll. He graduated from Wartburg College and received his master''s degree from the University of Iowa. He was the band director at Wheatland and Calamus Schools from 1964 until his retirement in 2003. He was Minister of Music at St. Paul''s United Church of Christ in Wheatland and played piano at St. James Catholic Church in Toronto. He was a member of the Iowa Band Masters Association, North East Iowa Band Masters Association, American School Band Directors Association, Music Educators National Conference, River Valley and Dean of the Blackhawk Chapters of the American Guild of Organists, and the Eastern Iowa Chapter of the Organ Historical Society. He was the recipient of the Iowa Bandmaster Association Karl L. King Distinguished Service Active and Karl L. King Distinguished Service Retired Awards as well as the North Eastern Iowa Bandmasters Association Phillip Sehmann Excellence in Teaching Award. He was listed in Who''s Who in America and Who''s Who in Education. August enjoyed travel, camping, reading, playing clarinet in numerous bands in eastern Iowa and listening to KSUI and recordings. Memorial donations may be given to St. Paul''s United Church of Christ Music Fund in Wheatland, Wartburg College Music Fund in Waverly, the University of Iowa Dept. of Music, or the August Knoll Scholarship at Calamus-Wheatland High School or send to, Edna Knoll, 32338 230th St., Grimes, IA 50111-8049.
