Norton Clark Smith

Norton C. Smith, 94, of Winfield, formerly of Wapello, passed away Tuesday, September 18, 2007 at the Sunrise Terrace Care Center in Winfield, IA. Per his wishes, Norton was cremated. Graveside services will be held at a later date in the Scott Cemetery in Winfield, Iowa. The Cremation Society of Eastern-Central-Western Iowa is assisting with arrangements. Norton Clark Smith was born October 3, 1912 to Justice and Katheryn (Weber) Smith in Mt. Union, IA. Norton married Marvel Leota Hewitt on July 17, 1934 in Michigan. Marvel preceded Norton in death on February 23, 2003. Norton graduated from Mt. Union High School in Mt. Union, IA in 1931. He was of Christian faith and last attended Church of the Nazarene, Wapello, IA. Norton was a 50-year member of the International Union of Midwest Operating Engineers Local Union #150. He was employed as a heavy equipment operating engineer working for various companies. In 1937 – 1938 he spent time in Panama working on the Panama Canal. Norton was a Mason for 59 years. He was a member of Masonic Lodge AF-AM, Wapello, IA, Shrine KAABA Temple, Davenport, IA and Louisa County Shrine Club. Norton was a life-long motorcycle enthusiast. As a young man, he participated in motorcycle racing and motorcycle polo matches as a member of the Flint Hill Riders. Norton enjoyed spending time with his family, traveling, listening to music, and eating ice cream. Survivors include his son Michael Smith of St. Johns, AZ; daughter Karen Daniel of Cape Canaveral, FL; daughter-in-law Shirley Smith of Wapello, IA; 8 grandchildren, Randy Smith of Wapello, IA, Debbie Smith-Ulstad of Mason City, IA, Joni Hollingsworth of Morning Sun, IA, John Smith of Oakville, IA, Darcie Schusster of Ponca City, OK, Todd Smith of Bozeman, MT, Leandra Smith of Bozeman, MT, and Michael Smith of Bull Head City, AZ; plus 15 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, son Larry Smith on April 17, 2005, sister Helen Smith-Ibbotson, and an infant brother, granddaughter, and great grandson. Memorials in Norton''s name may be sent to 14151 Co. Rd G62, Wapello, IA 52653, and will be directed to the Wapello Fire Department and Church of the Nazarene.
