George Smith Jones

George Smith Jones, 94, of Fayette and formerly of Edgerton, WI, died of age related causes on Wednesday November 21, 2007, at Maple Crest Manor in Fayette, IA. Memorial Services will be held Friday 4:00 p.m. November 30th, 2007, at the Lima Church in rural Fayette with inurnment following the service at the Lima Cemetery. There will be no visitation. George was born March 29th, 1913, to George and Cynthia (Smith) Jones in the stone house his grandfather built and that George grew up in near Lima, Iowa. He attended country school and graduated from Fayette High School. He married Wanda May Everett of Wadena on April 3rd, 1937. The couple had no children but was dearly loved by their many nieces, nephews and friends. George and Wanda made their home in Edgerton, WI where George worked at General Motors in Janesville, WI and at Hiway Trailer in Edgerton, WI as a toolmaker. He was a valued employee until his retirement. George and Wanda enjoyed bowling, gardening, playing cards, and dancing. For many years in the summer, George and Wanda would bring out the record player and the old time records and along with their neighbors would dance the night away in the street. It was a pleasure to all to watch George and Wanda dance the waltz. George always enjoyed a good story and had many to tell. He loved to laugh with his friends and family. George continued to live in Edgerton until August 2004 when he moved to an apartment at Maple Crest Manor in Fayette. He missed his WI family and friends, but he wanted to come back "home". He continued his joy of card games, music, dancing, family visits, and trips in the car to get a malt. George toured John Deere Engine Works in Waterloo last summer and always looked forward to the Jones family reunions. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Wanda who died in 2000, his twelve siblings; Emily Whitley, Susan Oelberg, Mildred (Myr) Wilder, William (Bill) Jones, Cecile (Teed) Dennler, Clara (Cad) Etter, Milton (Bud) Jones, Harley Jones (who died at age 4), Richard (Dick) Jones, Russell (Russ) Jones, Francis (Fran) Wood and Jeanne Muench. This family of 13, the children of George and Cynthia, spanned nearly 112 years, from the birth of Emily in January 1896 to George’s death on November 21, 2007. His many nephews, nieces, and wonderful friends survive George. George’s family would like to thank the staff at Maple Crest for all the fun memories and for the loving and gentle care he received while there. George will be remembered for his love of music, humor, integrity, and most of all his love for his family and friends.
